A baby boy's nursery comes together when you choose a theme he can grow into, like airplanes, dinosaurs, or the outdoors, and let the wall art bring the room together. Take two or three colors from the art, keep the furniture plain, and the room will still suit him the day he climbs out of the crib.
Some parents want the theme clear from day one: planes, trucks, dinosaurs. Others want something softer that only hints at it. Both work, and you'll find both below.
Here are 10 baby boy nursery themes. Each comes with three colors, a gallery set you put together yourself, and two single prints that fit it.

How do you plan a baby boy nursery?
I work through four steps, in this order, and most of the room decides itself.
- Choose a theme with room to grow. A plane, a lion or a fishing boat still feels right at five. A cartoon character usually doesn't.
- Start with the art. Choose the prints before the paint. A set of three over the crib or dresser gives you your colors, your mood and your focal wall in one decision.
- Take three colors from it. One for the walls, one for the big furniture and one small accent. Every idea below lists three.
- Keep the rest quiet. Plain bedding, a simple rug and wood furniture let the wall do the talking.
Baby boy nursery ideas by theme
1. Airplane nursery idea
Old propeller planes are my favorite way into this theme. They feel like an adventure and still look calm when you're up with him at night.
Our Vintage Blue Airplane gallery has 11 designs in steel blue and misty grey, among them a fighter skimming over a rough sea and a big four-engine plane crossing a desert mesa. Next to it, two best sellers: a navy vintage plane over misty mountains and tall pines, and a giraffe at the controls of a blue plane in a lightning storm. The giraffe puts a grin on an otherwise grown-up wall.
Colors: steel blue, misty grey and cream
Pairs well with: adventure and the outdoors (idea 4) and space (idea 7).

There's more in our airplane nursery decor collection, and my airplane nursery decor post has 24 ideas for a little pilot's room.
2. Car and truck nursery idea
Wheels are a subject he can keep for years, from the push toy on the floor to his first bike.
The Navy Vintage Race Cars gallery has 7 designs on one navy background with the same copper wheels. My pick is the yellow number 5 racer; the stack of three cream cars in blue checks is a close second. For something sillier, two best sellers put animals behind the wheel: a giraffe, an elephant and a seagull off to the beach in soft pastels, and two puppies driving a yellow cab.
Colors: navy, copper and cream
Pairs well with: airplanes (idea 1) and safari (idea 5).

3. Dinosaur nursery idea
A herd of long-necks can look as gentle as any bunny. The trick is soft, earthy colors instead of bright green teeth.
Our Earthy Landscape Dinosaur gallery has 9 designs in moss green, mustard and rust, from long-necks wading through golden grass to four baby dinosaurs curled up in a ring. Two best sellers sit well beside it: a smiling dinosaur wrapped around a sleeping child under the moon, and striped dinosaurs grazing along a river in plum, amber and sage. The sleepy one is the print I'd hang over the crib.
Colors: moss green, mustard and rust
Pairs well with: adventure and the outdoors (idea 4) and safari (idea 5).

4. Adventure and outdoors nursery idea
For parents who camp, hike or love a long road trip, this is the room that tells him he's coming along.
The Blue Truck Bear gallery has 4 designs in dusty blue, warm brown and pine green. In one, a bear stretches out on the hood of a blue truck under the stars; in another, a grizzly on the roof watches the mountains through binoculars. Pair it with two best sellers: a tent tucked among tall pines, and a bear and a child roasting marshmallows by a campfire.
Colors: dusty blue, pine green and warm brown
Pairs well with: fishing (idea 6) and bears (idea 10).

Browse our mountain nursery decor, and my adventure nursery post has 20 ideas for a little explorer.
5. Safari nursery idea
Lions and their cubs are a classic for a reason: strong and tender at the same time.
The Orange Sun Safari Family gallery is the bold choice: navy and teal animals against one big orange sun. A lion cub touches noses with its dad, a baby monkey laughs in a parent's arms, and there are 17 more parent-and-baby designs. For a quieter wall, two best sellers: a lion cub under an acacia tree in soft watercolor tones of gold and dusty green, and a father lion leaning down to his cub in golden light.
Colors: honey gold, dusty green and navy
Pairs well with: cars and trucks (idea 2) and dinosaurs (idea 3).

There's plenty more in our safari nursery decor collection, and 28 ideas in my safari nursery decor post.
6. Fishing nursery idea
A little boat on still water is one of the calmest pictures you can hang in a baby's room.
Our Riverside Boy and Spaniel gallery has 7 countryside designs of a boy in a flat cap and his brown spaniel, in an oil-painting style and a palette of moss green, russet and slate grey. In one, they fish together from a little wooden rowboat. Two best sellers fit beside it: a child fishing on a still lake below tall mountains, and a little bear asleep in a rowboat in soft blues.
Colors: moss green, slate grey and russet
Pairs well with: adventure and the outdoors (idea 4) and the sea (idea 8).

My fishing nursery post has 18 ideas for a little angler.
7. Space nursery idea
Moons and stars belong in a room built for sleep, and a little astronaut gives them a story.
The Little Astronauts gallery has 12 designs in deep navy, soft lavender and starlight silver. One little astronaut lies back on the moon under shooting stars; two more sit together on a crescent moon. Two best sellers go with it: a bear asleep on a crescent moon, and a small astronaut in a field at night holding a glowing star.
Colors: deep navy, starlight silver and soft gold
Pairs well with: airplanes (idea 1) and the sea (idea 8).

8. Sea and sailing nursery idea
Blue water gives you the classic boy blue in its calmest form, without a single anchor in sight.
Our Misty Blue Sea Animals gallery has 11 designs in a pencil-sketch style with soft watercolor-style washes, in misty blue, sea green and cream. An octopus pours tea for a crowd of fish, and two sea otters sail a paper boat. The two best sellers I'd add: a tiger lounging on a wooden sailboat with a picnic basket, and a humpback whale family gliding past a full moon.
Colors: misty blue, sea green and sand
Pairs well with: fishing (idea 6) and space (idea 7).

9. Little sports fan nursery idea
If your family already has a team, the wall can join in, gently.
The Vintage Golfing Animals gallery has animals out on the course in an ink-style vintage look, from a rabbit sending the ball flying to a bear in a cable-knit sweater leaning on his club, all inside the same scalloped tan panel with wide brown and cream stripes. Two best sellers suit a baseball family: a worn baseball resting among flowers and butterflies, and a young player mid-swing against a starry sky.
Colors: grass green, sandy tan and cream
Pairs well with: cars and trucks (idea 2) and space (idea 7).

Browse our sports wall art collection. When he outgrows the crib, my baseball room ideas post picks up the story.
10. Bear and woodland nursery idea
Bears are the softest way to do a classic boy room, and they work with almost any palette.
The Vintage Motorcycle Bears gallery is a best seller and the boldest set in this post: 3 designs of brown bears in goggles on old-style motorcycles, each inside a red border with a checkerboard edge, in a vintage storybook style. For a quieter wall, two best sellers bring the bears back into the woods: a bear looking through a telescope at the moon, and a black bear peeking out from behind a tree.
Colors: chocolate brown, forest green and cream
Pairs well with: adventure and the outdoors (idea 4) and fishing (idea 6).

What colors work in a baby boy nursery?
Blue is fine. I'd just choose a dusty or slate blue over a bright one, and pair it with cream and warm wood so the room doesn't feel cold.
Three palettes come up again and again in the ideas above:
- Dusty blue, cream and natural wood for airplanes, the sea and space.
- Sage or moss green with tan and rust for dinosaurs, the outdoors, fishing and bears.
- Navy with one warm accent, like copper or sunset orange, for cars, safari and sports.
Take your palette from the art, not from a paint chip. Matching walls to a print is much easier than the other way around. Our blue nursery wall art and green nursery decor collections are good places to start.
What size art does a boy nursery need?
Size the art to the furniture below it, not to the whole wall. I aim for the print, or the group, to cover about two-thirds of the width of the crib or dresser underneath. Smaller looks lost; wider crowds the room.
Three setups work in almost every nursery:
- One large print over the crib or dresser. The simplest look, and the calmest.
- A row of three matching prints over the crib or a long dresser. Leave 2 to 3 inches between frames so the three read as one piece.
- A pair over the changing table or on a narrow wall beside the glider.
Choose the same size for every print in a set, so the frames line up and the gaps stay even. Some prints are upright and some landscape; each listing shows its sizes. If two favorites come in different shapes, hang them with their centers on one level.
Still deciding? Cut paper to the sizes you're weighing and tape it to the wall for a day. It's the quickest way to see what fits.
Most of the gallery sets above let you pick any 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 prints from one look, all in the same size and finish, so the matching is done for you. Our frames come in natural oak, walnut, white and black, with kid-safe plexi or real glass. For a boy nursery I'd choose natural oak or walnut; warm wood keeps navy and slate from feeling heavy.
Where should the art hang in a nursery?
In a nursery, I center wall art about 48 inches from the floor. That's eye level for a parent sitting in the glider, which is where you'll look at it most. The 57 inches you'll often read is meant for living rooms, where people stand (Architectural Digest). Leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it.
Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art over a crib, hang it securely with proper hardware, never tape or one small nail, and choose the framed version with kid-safe plexi, not glass. We offer both, and plexi is the one I'd want above a sleeping baby. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC).
Baby boy nursery questions parents ask
What are good themes for a baby boy nursery?
Airplanes, cars, dinosaurs, safari animals, the outdoors and the sea are the ones I suggest most. Each has art that looks gentle in a nursery and still makes sense in a five-year-old's room. Choose the one with a story your family already loves.
Does a boy nursery have to be blue?
No. Green, rust, tan and navy-with-mustard all read as a boy's room once the theme is there. Several of the ideas above lead with greens and browns.
How do I keep a boy nursery from looking babyish?
Skip the cartoon characters and choose art with a scene in it: a plane over mountains, a lion and his cub, a boat on a lake. Those still look right at five. Swap the crib later, and keep the wall.
