Airplane nursery decor works best when one kind of plane, and one sky, sets the colors for the whole room. A sepia biplane gives you a quiet, old-fashioned room; a crayon-bright plane gives you a playful one. Pick the print first, take two or three colors from it, and keep the rest of the room simple.
Below are 24 airplane nursery ideas in four groups: vintage planes, soft and sweet skies, animal pilots, and bold modern looks. Each one comes with three colors and the prints that make it work. Our airplane nursery decor collection is a short list to start from, and our airplane wall art collection has the full fleet.

How to plan an airplane nursery
These are the four steps I follow for every airplane room, whatever the style.
- Choose your era of flight. Old biplanes and propeller planes feel warm and storybook; modern jets feel clean and graphic. Deciding this first keeps the room from looking like a mix of toy boxes.
- Let the sky set the colors. Most airplane prints are more sky than plane, so the sky color is your wall color. Take the plane's color as your accent.
- Stick to one orientation per wall. Many plane prints are wide rather than tall. Hang wide prints together and tall prints together, and the wall will look planned.
- Keep the furniture quiet. A plain crib, a soft rug and simple curtains let the planes do the talking. The room feels finished instead of busy.
Vintage airplane nursery ideas
1. Vintage biplane nursery idea
Two stacked wings and a spinning propeller say "airplane" to a child faster than anything else. These prints show a red and yellow biplane skimming low over the water, a tiny red and blue biplane on a clean white ground, and a teal biplane drifting past puffy clouds.
I like this look for a first nursery because it's cheerful without being loud. Pull the red from the prints into one cushion or a toy basket and keep the walls a soft sky blue.
Pairs well with: sepia watercolor and bedtime stars.

2. Sepia watercolor airplane nursery idea
For the quietest version of this theme, go sepia. Soft brown washes show a floatplane resting on a misty lake, a small plane gliding over a line of pine trees, and a biplane climbing past rocky peaks.
These have the look of an old travel journal, which suits a neutral nursery with linen, cream and pale wood. Hang three in a row and the wall feels finished without a single bright color.
Pairs well with: vintage hangar and patchwork fields.

3. Vintage hangar nursery idea
Some families want the workshop side of flying: the hangar, the engine, the moment before take-off. Here you get a plane parked inside a wooden hangar, a close look at a round propeller engine, and a twin-engine plane flying past a tall sea cliff.
All three share the same warm sepia tones, so they work as a set straight away. They grow well into a big-kid room for a child who likes to know how things work.
Pairs well with: sepia watercolor and pencil sketch.

4. Blue skies propeller plane nursery idea
Classic blue propeller planes above a sea of soft white clouds are the classic picture of an airplane room. One plane banks over the cloud tops, one heads straight for you with its propeller spinning, and one with bent gull wings sails past the mist.
The prints are mostly sky and cloud, so they keep the room light. A slate blue accent wall and white furniture let the planes stand out.
Pairs well with: navy and pine and snowy mountain.

6. Patchwork fields airplane nursery idea
Looking down from a plane, the ground turns into a quilt of green and gold fields. These prints catch that view: a plane flying high over a patchwork countryside, another crossing a valley of square fields, and a blue plane over a long green landscape.
Earthy greens and wheat tones are easy to live with, and they pair well with a wood crib and a simple plaid throw. It's a calm, grown-up take on the theme.
Pairs well with: golden fields and sepia watercolor.

7. Snowy mountain airplane nursery idea
Planes against snow and ice make a crisp, wintry wall. A grey propeller plane heads toward you over snow-capped peaks, and two bright yellow planes cruise above a glacier valley and a still mountain lake.
White and ice blue keep it fresh, and the yellow planes stop it from feeling cold. This works well in a north-facing room that needs a little sunshine on the wall.
Pairs well with: blue skies propeller plane and coastal seaplane.

8. Pencil sketch airplane nursery idea
Black and white line-drawn prints give this theme a graphic, almost architectural feel. You'll find a classic propeller plane in fine pencil-sketch style, a second plane parked on the ground in the same look, and a modern jet caught mid-turn.
Babies love strong contrast, and these grow with a child well into the school years. Frame them in black or walnut and add one warm wood piece so the room doesn't feel stark.
Pairs well with: vintage hangar and jet travel.

Soft and sweet airplane nursery ideas
9. Bedtime stars airplane nursery idea
Night-sky prints turn the airplane theme into a bedtime story. A smiling plane floats among clouds and little stars, a red plane flies past a huge golden moon, and a paper airplane carries a few small animals past the planets.
This is my pick for the wall above the crib. Deep blues and soft gold set a sleepy mood, and the smiling plane is a face your baby will look for every night.
Pairs well with: vintage biplane and pastel clouds.

10. Rainbow and wildflower airplane nursery idea
Wildflowers and rainbows soften a plane straight away. One cream plane glides over a flower field under a pale rainbow, another flies over a sunny meadow full of daisies, and a teddy bear pilots a little orange plane through a rainbow.
Soft pastels make this one of the easiest airplane looks for a girl's nursery or a gender-neutral room. Keep the bedding white so the rainbow colors stay gentle.
Pairs well with: pastel clouds and animal pilots.

11. Pastel clouds airplane nursery idea
Picture big soft clouds with one small plane tucked into them. A green and yellow plane flies through pale aqua clouds, a little red plane climbs out of a sea of white ones, and a jet cruises far above the cloud tops.
Cloud prints feel airy, so they suit a small nursery that needs to look bigger. Paint the walls the palest blue and let the clouds carry the theme.
Pairs well with: bedtime stars and rainbow and wildflower.

12. Golden fields airplane nursery idea
Late-summer fields and slow little planes make a warm, country-style room. A small plane flies past a big shady tree over golden grass, a yellow plane rests in a wheat field, and a dark plane passes low over tall grass where two deer stand watching.
Honey and wheat tones feel cozy in any season. Pair them with warm wood, a cream rug and one sage green accent.
Pairs well with: patchwork fields and watching the planes.

13. Coastal seaplane nursery idea
If your family loves the water, a seaplane is the natural pick. A cream seaplane flies over a bay full of sailboats, a dark plane passes a lighthouse in the sea grass, and a seaplane rests on a lake ringed with autumn trees.
Sandy neutrals and soft blues give the room a beach-house calm. A striped curtain and a pale wood floor are all it needs.
Pairs well with: snowy mountain and golden fields.

14. Watching the planes nursery idea
Every child who has stood at a fence and waved at a plane will know these scenes. A boy and his dog sit on a hill watching a plane cross the sky, and a boy in a wheat field waves up at a red biplane.
These two tell a story, so they work well over a reading chair. The soft blue sky and golden fields sit nicely with the golden fields idea above.
Pairs well with: golden fields and vintage biplane.

Animal pilot nursery ideas
15. Animal pilots nursery idea
Put an animal in the cockpit and an airplane nursery gets a sense of humor. A giraffe in goggles flies a blue plane through a stormy sky, a dinosaur zooms by in an orange and yellow plane, and a bunny in a flying cap pilots a red plane under a bright sun.
Toddlers love naming the pilots, so this one earns its keep for years. Mix the animals freely, but keep the sky colors close so the three read as a set.
Pairs well with: rainbow and wildflower and panda pilots.

16. Sage green airfield nursery idea
These muted, sage green prints imagine wild animals visiting a quiet country airfield. A giraffe bends down to sniff a little mustard-yellow plane, a lion sits calmly on the runway, and an elephant walks beneath the tail of a big plane.
Sage is one of the calmest colors you can put in a nursery, and these prints lean into it. Add pale oak furniture and a cream rug and the room feels settled from day one.
Pairs well with: panda pilots and safari airfield.

17. Panda pilots nursery idea
Pandas take this theme somewhere sweet and a bit silly. One panda pilots a weathered brown biplane across a green meadow, one hugs a giant propeller, and one strolls past a small plane parked by the hangar.
Black and white pandas on soft green give you contrast and calm in one go. It's a lovely gender-neutral choice.
Pairs well with: sage green airfield and animal pilots.

18. Woodland airfield nursery idea
Forest animals meet old planes in this set. A bear stands up to peer into a little parked plane, a big brown bear walks past a propeller in the tall grass, and a fawn rests beside a biplane in a mountain meadow.
If you're torn between a woodland nursery and an airplane one, this is the answer. Mossy greens and browns keep it earthy and soft.
Pairs well with: navy and pine and sage green airfield.

19. Safari airfield nursery idea
For a warmer, wilder take, these prints bring the savanna to the runway. A leopard lounges on the wing of an old biplane, two cheetahs sit in a hangar doorway watching a plane, and an ostrich races a silver plane across the dust.
Tan, olive and dusty grey make this a good fit for a safari-leaning room that still wants planes in it. Woven baskets and a soft cream rug suit it well.
Pairs well with: sage green airfield and patchwork fields.

Bold and modern airplane nursery ideas
20. Crayon leopard print airplane nursery idea
These are styled like a child's best crayon picture, with planes dressed in leopard spots. A leopard-print biplane fills a scalloped turquoise frame, a cream and tan plane carries a red star, and a biplane trails a long spotted scarf across deep blue.
The scribbled texture makes them playful, and the leopard print makes them a little fashionable. They're happiest in a room with white walls and one bold rug.
Pairs well with: crayon skies and helicopter and.

21. Crayon skies airplane nursery idea
Same crayon style, different skies. A biplane loops through a ring of white clouds on a peach sunset, a brown biplane with cream stars flies over red mountains, and a red and white checkered plane dashes across bright blue.
Warm sunset colors make this set feel bright but friendly. It's a good choice for a playroom or a toddler room that needs energy.
Pairs well with: crayon leopard print and jet travel.

22. Helicopter and airplane nursery idea
Helicopters count too, and some little ones love them even more than planes. Two crayon-style helicopters, one in leopard spots with red stars and one in red with white stars, sit nicely beside a leopard-print plane landing on bright green grass.
Mixing helicopters and planes keeps the wall lively. Hang them at the same height in matching frames so the mix still looks planned.
Pairs well with: crayon leopard print and crayon skies.

23. Jet travel nursery idea
For parents who travel, or dream of it, modern jets feel right. A jet seen from above sits on bold peach and teal stripes, a jetliner faces you on a glowing sunset runway, and a jet flies straight at you through a pink and gold sky.
These are the most modern prints in the post. Keep the furniture clean-lined and let one sunset color run through the room.
Pairs well with: mid-century poster and pencil sketch.

24. Mid-century poster airplane nursery idea
Flat shapes and simple color blocks give these prints the feel of an old travel poster. A camouflage propeller plane banks over sandy hills, a yellow plane flies over golden dunes and dark mountains, and a long-winged plane crosses a desert mesa at dusk.
Desert tones like ochre and dusty blue are warm and unexpected in a nursery. They also hold up well as a child gets older, so you won't need to redo the walls.
Pairs well with: jet travel and safari airfield.

An airplane nursery for a boy, a girl, or either
Planes are a classic for baby boys, and parents planning a boy's room often go for the blue skies propeller plane, navy and pine, pencil sketch or animal pilots ideas. A flying theme suits girls just as well, though. The rainbow and wildflowers, pastel clouds and crayon leopard print rooms are the ones I'd show first for a girl.
For a room that suits any child, the sepia watercolor, sage airfield animals, panda pilots and bedtime stars ideas sit right in the middle.
Choosing airplane nursery decor for the walls
The walls do most of the work in an airplane room, so it's worth getting the art right before you buy anything else. My rule of thumb: one large print on its own, or a set of two or three in matching frames. Over a crib or a dresser, a row of three is the easiest layout to get right.
Mixing planes is fine as long as the skies match. Three different planes on the same soft blue read as one set; three planes on three different skies look like a stack of postcards. Watch the shape too: a row of wide prints over a crib looks calm, while one wide print between two tall ones can look accidental.
Every print in our airplane nursery decor collection comes in five sizes, unframed or framed, so a matching set is simple to build. If planes are one idea among several, my nursery themes guide shows how a flying theme sits next to 70 others.
Beyond the walls: mobiles, rugs and shelves
Once the art is up, a few extras finish the theme. I keep it to two or three, so the room still feels calm.
- A plane or cloud mobile. Hang it well out of your baby's reach and clear of the framed art, never overlapping a print.
- A soft rug in a sky or cloud color. Choose something that feels good under small hands and knees, like wool or a plush washable rug, rather than anything rough.
- One shelf of wooden planes. A row of toy planes on a high shelf repeats the theme without adding clutter at floor level.
- Curtains that match the sky. Plain or softly striped curtains in the wall color keep the windows from competing with the art.
Hanging wall art safely in a nursery
Hang wall art with its center about 57 inches from the floor, and leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it (Architectural Digest). In a nursery I bring that a little lower, so the art reads at a seated eye level from the rocker.
Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art near the crib, my own rule is simple: hang it securely and out of reach, using proper hardware rather than tape or one small nail. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC, 2025).
Airplane nursery questions parents ask
What colors go with an airplane nursery?
Start with the sky in your prints. Soft sky blue with cream and one red accent is the classic, sepia and linen make a quiet neutral room, and sage green suits the animal airfield prints. Each idea above lists three colors to start with.
Is an airplane nursery only for boys?
Not at all. Rainbow, wildflower and pastel cloud prints make a soft airplane room for a girl, and the sepia, sage and bedtime star ideas suit any baby.
Vintage or modern planes: which is better for a nursery?
Vintage biplanes and propeller planes feel softer and more storybook, so they're the easier choice for a baby room. Modern jets and pencil sketches look sharper and grow well into a big-kid room. Pick the one that matches the rest of your home.
How many airplane prints should go on a nursery wall?
One large print or a set of two or three works for most nursery walls. A matching row of three over a crib or dresser is the easiest way to fill a wall without it looking busy.
How high should you hang airplane prints in a nursery?
Hang art with its center about 57 inches from the floor and 6 to 8 inches above furniture (Architectural Digest). Keep the crib empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep), and hang any art near the crib securely and out of reach.
Will an airplane theme still work when my child is older?
Yes, especially if you lean on the art rather than themed furniture. Swap the softest prints for the pencil sketch, jet travel or mid-century poster ideas later, and the same room becomes a big-kid bedroom.
