Adventure is a big word to hang on one small room. It can mean mountains, a campfire, a sailboat or a fox with a telescope, and trying to fit all of them in tends to give you a room that looks like a souvenir shop.
The fix is simple: choose one kind of adventure and let it set the colors.
Below are 20 adventure themed nursery ideas in three groups: by place, by how they travel, and by the little explorer leading the way. Each one comes with three colors and the prints that make it work.
If you'd rather browse first, start with our adventure nursery decor of misty mountains and wandering bears, then our camping wall art and hot air balloon prints.

How to plan an adventure themed nursery
I use the same four steps whichever adventure a family picks.
- Choose one kind of adventure. Mountains, the sea, a road trip or a little explorer animal. One clear story reads better than five half-told ones.
- Take three colors from the art. One for the walls, one for the big pieces and one accent. Every idea below lists three to start you off.
- Let one wall tell the story. A set of two or three prints over the crib or dresser carries the theme, so the bedding, rug and curtains can stay plain.
- Plan for the big-kid years. Adventure grows up well. Choose prints a five-year-old will still like, and the room only needs a new bed later, not new walls.
Adventure nursery ideas by place
1. Mountain adventure nursery idea
I usually start an adventure nursery with mountains. These prints show a grizzly standing above a sea of mist at sunset, a bear resting among wildflowers under a blue peak, and a chestnut horse lying down in a mountain meadow.
All three share a soft pink sky and layered blue ridges, so they hang as a set even though the animals change. Pick up the pink in a blanket and the blue in a dresser, and the room is mostly done.
Pairs well with: snowy north and hot air balloon.

2. Camping nursery idea
Nothing says adventure to a toddler faster than a tent under tall trees. Here you'll find a little tent among misty pines, a bear and a small boy watching the stars beside a campfire, and a fox curled up asleep by an orange tent.
Campfire orange is the accent color here. Keep it to the art and one cushion on the rocker, and let forest greens and a warm cream wall do the rest.
Pairs well with: starry night adventure and woodland trail.

3. Lakeside cabin nursery idea
Think of the cabin by the lake: quiet, woodsy and a little bit sleepy. A bear drifts in a wooden boat, a child in a canoe meets a curious moose, and another bear sits with a fishing rod while the mountains reflect in the water.
Lake scenes are calm by nature, which is what you want above a crib. Pair them with a wood crib, a plaid throw and pale blue-grey walls.
Pairs well with: mountain adventure and camping.

4. Woodland trail nursery idea
If your family's adventures start in the woods behind the house, these are your prints. A small explorer meets a squirrel among hazy trees, a bear with a guitar leads a forest band with a fox and a bunny, and a bear peeks out of a treehouse.
The woods are the gentlest way into the theme, and they mix easily with the bears and foxes further down. Moss green and soft brown carry it.
Pairs well with: fox explorer and bear explorer.

5. Sailing nursery idea
Adventure doesn't have to mean mountains. For a family that loves the water, there's a cream-sailed boat gliding over calm water, a sailboat resting at anchor, and waves breaking on a rocky shore.
Soft blues and sandy neutrals keep a sailing room restful. A striped rug and a woven toy basket make the theme clear without a single anchor on the bedding.
Pairs well with: lakeside cabin and hot air balloon.
6. Snowy north nursery idea
Snow and ice give an adventure nursery a cool, still feel. A polar bear crosses the tundra under a pink sky, a brown bear stops for a drink at a glacier lake, and another polar bear sits looking up at the northern lights.
These suit a pale room with lots of white and soft grey, and they're one of the easiest choices if you want the theme to stay neutral. A chunky knit throw on the rocker adds warmth.
Pairs well with: mountain adventure and starry night adventure.

7. Desert adventure nursery idea
Warm, sunny and a little unexpected, a desert adventure stands apart from the woodsy ideas. There are tall cacti on golden dunes, a camel crossing the sand, and a very relaxed camel in sunglasses standing in front of the pyramids.
Sand, terracotta and one blue accent make this one of the warmest looks in the post. It's a good pick for a nursery that gets lots of afternoon sun.
Pairs well with: around the world and safari friends.
8. Starry night adventure nursery idea
This is the bedtime version of the theme. Golden hills and a winding river sit under a full moon, a boy and his bear look up through a telescope, and a little astronaut toasts marshmallows by a fire with a bunny.
Deep blue can feel heavy in a small room, so keep it to the art and perhaps the wall behind the crib, and paint the rest warm white. The gold moons and stars stand out against it.
Pairs well with: camping and little astronaut.

Adventure nursery ideas by how they travel
9. Hot air balloon nursery idea
Hot air balloons are adventure at its gentlest. One print has a script-style 'Adventure Awaits' over sunset mountains with a balloon drifting past, one has a koala and a fawn floating in a spotted balloon, and one stacks four sage and blush gingham balloons up the page.
If you've been looking at 'adventure awaits' nursery signs, the first print gives you the same words in a softer way. Pale sky blue walls and a white crib let the balloons float.
Pairs well with: bunny adventurer and vintage airplane.

10. Vintage airplane nursery idea
Old planes bring a little nostalgia to the room. All three of these sit in soft sepia and green: a vintage plane over an evergreen forest, a sketch-style biplane above snowy peaks, and a spotted fawn standing beside a biplane on a misty airstrip.
The muted colors match wood furniture and a warm grey or cream wall. These are also the ones I'd choose if you want the room to grow into a big-kid room without changing the art.
Pairs well with: mountain train and hot air balloon.

11. Road trip nursery idea
Every family has a road trip story, and these prints give your baby their first one. A little car winds along a country road under a golden sun, a frog drives a cream car through the woods with a goose riding along, and a rugged off-road truck waits in soft neutral tones.
The frog and the goose are a bit silly, which toddlers love. Keep the walls light and pull the olive from the truck into a toy bin or a lampshade.
Pairs well with: safari friends and bear explorer.
12. Mountain train nursery idea
If there's a train fan in your family already, start here. A steam train crosses a mountain valley under a pastel sky, another puffs between tall peaks with smoke curling like whipped cream, and a third rolls over a stone bridge past golden fields.
The bold brushstroke styling in the middle print gives the set some energy, while the other two stay soft. Hang them in a row over a dresser so the trains seem to travel across the wall.
Pairs well with: vintage airplane and mountain adventure.

13. Bicycle adventure nursery idea
A bike ride is the smallest adventure there is, and these prints make it a sweet one. A parent bear pedals through the pines with a baby bear along for the ride, a child cycles past tall canal houses with a basket of flowers, and an elephant rides a rocket-powered bicycle among the planets.
Three very different trips, but the soft colors let them share a wall. Parents who love cycling tend to like this one, because it feels a little personal.
Pairs well with: around the world and little astronaut.

14. Around the world nursery idea
For a family that travels, or dreams about it, each of these prints visits a different place. A girl and her dog wait in the London rain beside a red double-decker bus, a girl shares tea with a panda below the Great Wall, and a small explorer stands with a giraffe looking out over waterfalls.
Travel prints can turn into a busy collage fast. Keep to three in matching frames and choose a soft wall color that lets each scene stand on its own.
Pairs well with: bicycle adventure and desert adventure.

Little explorers leading the way
15. Bear explorer nursery idea
Bears make brave little explorers. One sits on top of a powder blue truck scanning the mountains with binoculars, one paddles a canoe through a canyon with a boy, and one flies a little plane through the clouds under a rainbow.
Bears already turn up in plenty of nurseries, so this is an easy way to give a bear room an adventure story. Warm browns and dusty rose suit them.
Pairs well with: woodland trail and road trip.
16. Fox explorer nursery idea
Foxes are curious by nature, which makes them good guides. A small explorer and a fox walk a misty forest path together, a fox floats down under a rainbow parachute, and another rides in a balloon basket peering through a brass telescope.
Fox orange is a cheerful accent against sage or soft blue walls. It also sits nicely with natural wood, so a light oak crib suits this room.
Pairs well with: woodland trail and hot air balloon.

17. Koala scout nursery idea
These koalas have a camping trip of their own going. One sets up beside a tent under the stars, one peeks out of the ferns in a tiny explorer's helmet, and one sits by a campfire inside a ring of pine trees.
Deep green borders and pine trees give these a retro, storybook look that's quite different from the softer ideas above. Hang all three together and keep the rest of the room cream.
Pairs well with: camping and starry night adventure.

18. Bunny adventurer nursery idea
Who says bunnies stay home? Two helmeted bunnies race a little red chariot, a rabbit floats under a red parachute above geometric clouds, and a bunny in a tidy suit rides a bright patchwork balloon.
Red runs through this whole set, so one red accent elsewhere in the room ties it together. It suits a nursery that wants some color without going loud.
Pairs well with: hot air balloon and fox explorer.

19. Safari friends nursery idea
With safari animals, the adventure feels far away and friendly. A sloth hugs a giraffe in the back of an old brown truck, a baby elephant takes the wheel of a pickup, and a lion floats over rolling hills in a hot air balloon.
All three sit on pale backgrounds in soft watercolor tones, calm enough for a baby and funny enough for a toddler. A woven basket and a cream rug finish the look.
Pairs well with: road trip and desert adventure.

20. Little astronaut nursery idea
Some adventures go all the way up. A koala astronaut floats by holding a tiny star flag, a little astronaut drifts above the clouds with a golden balloon, and two small astronauts swing their legs from a crescent moon.
Outer space is a theme of its own, but these three stay soft enough to sit with the starry night and hot air balloon ideas. Navy, gold and cloud white are all you need.
Pairs well with: starry night adventure and bicycle adventure.

An adventure nursery for a boy, a girl, or either
Adventure suits any baby. When parents ask me for an adventure themed nursery for a boy, they often lean toward the road trip, mountain train, vintage airplane or bear explorer rooms. For a girl, the hot air balloon, bunny adventurer, around the world and sailing ideas are softer places to start.
If you're keeping it a surprise, or simply want a room that suits any child, the mountain adventure, woodland trail, snowy north and starry night adventure ideas sit right in the middle.
Choosing adventure nursery decor for the walls
Wall art does most of the work in an adventure nursery, so get the wall right before you buy anything else. My rule of thumb: one large print on its own, or a set of two or three in matching frames.
Over a crib or a dresser, a row of three is the easiest layout to get right.
You can mix ideas as long as the colors agree. A mountain adventure print next to a bear explorer print works because both lean on dusty pink and blue; a desert camel beside a navy night sky usually doesn't.
Every print in this post comes in five sizes, unframed or framed in natural, walnut, white or black oak, so a matching set is simple to build. For frames near the crib, I choose the kid-safe plexi option over glass.
For more adventure nursery decor, the mountain collection has more bears, snow leopards and horses under the same soft skies. If adventure is one idea among several, the mountain, camping and hot air balloon sections of my nursery themes guide show how they sit next to 70 other themes.
Hanging wall art safely in a nursery
Hang wall art with its center about 57 inches from the floor, and leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it (Architectural Digest). In a nursery I bring that a little lower, so the art reads at a seated eye level from the rocker.
Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art near the crib, my own rule is simple: hang it securely and out of reach, using proper hardware rather than tape or one small nail. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC, 2025).
From adventure nursery to adventure themed bedroom
Adventure is a theme that gets better as your child gets older. A toddler who starts pointing at the bear in the canoe will, a few years on, be asking to go camping. When the crib goes, keep the art and change the furniture around it.
For a big-kid room, add one more print in the same colors and let your child choose it. The mountain train, vintage airplane and around the world ideas are the easiest to grow with, because they never looked like baby art to begin with.
Adventure nursery questions parents ask
What colors go with an adventure themed nursery?
Take the colors from your prints. Forest green and campfire orange suit camping rooms, sky blue and sage suit hot air balloons, and dusty pink with ridge blue suits mountains. Each idea above lists three colors to start with.
Is an adventure nursery gender neutral?
Yes. Mountains, woods, snow and starry skies suit any baby, and a room built on a place rather than pink or blue grows easily into a toddler room. The mountain, woodland trail and snowy north ideas are the most neutral.
What goes in an adventure nursery besides wall art?
Keep it simple: a wood crib with only a fitted sheet, a soft low-pile rug, a rocker with a knit throw, a dresser and a basket of books. Let the prints carry the theme, and pick up one or two of their colors in the textiles.
How many prints should go on an adventure nursery wall?
One large print or a set of two or three works for most nursery walls. A matching set of three in a row over a crib or dresser is the easiest way to fill a wall without it looking busy.
How high should you hang art in an adventure nursery?
Hang art with its center about 57 inches from the floor and 6 to 8 inches above furniture (Architectural Digest). Keep the crib empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep), and hang any art near the crib securely and out of reach.
Will an adventure nursery work as my child gets older?
Yes, and it's one of my favorite themes for that reason. Keep the art, swap the crib for a bed, and add a print your child picks. Trains, vintage planes and travel scenes look just as good in a big-kid room.
