Vintage car nursery decor works best when the cars feel like characters, not machines. An old racer with a fox at the wheel, a pickup in crayon-style colors, a little red car on a moonlit hill: pick the print that makes you smile, take two or three colors from it, and keep the rest of the room simple.
Below are 22 car themed nursery ideas in four groups: vintage cars, race cars, trucks and road trips, and a few playful ones. Each comes with three colors and the prints that make it work. To see everything in one place, browse our vintage car nursery decor collection.

How to pull a car themed nursery together
These four steps are the ones I use for every car nursery, whether it ends up vintage, sporty or soft.
- Choose the kind of car first. Old racers, pickup trucks and road trip scenes each set a very different mood. Settle on one and the rest of the decisions get easier.
- Take three colors from the art. One for the walls, one for the bigger pieces and one accent. Each idea below lists three to get you started.
- Let the art carry the theme. Car bedding, car rugs and car lamps all at once can tip a room into a toy store. Two or three prints on the wall usually say enough.
- Plan for the toddler years. Babies love bold shapes, and toddlers love naming every vehicle they see. Prints that suit both, like the vintage racers or the pickup trucks, keep the room working for years.
Vintage car nursery ideas
1. Animal racers in goggles nursery idea
Small animals in leather helmets are the heart of a vintage car nursery for me. A mouse with his goggles pushed up, a badger hunched low over the wheel and a squirrel with his tail streaming out behind him all sit on soft, warm paper tones.
Because the backgrounds are so quiet, the three prints read as one set even though each animal is different. Hang them in a row over the crib and let walnut or honey wood pick up their browns.
Pairs well with: dapper drivers and hot rod.

2. Dapper drivers nursery idea
These drivers look ready for a Sunday outing: a red fox in a racing cap, a cat behind the wheel of a sleek old racer and an otter gripping the wheel of a cream and brown roadster.
The sepia, sketchbook look feels like pages from an old storybook. I like it with a cream wall, a cane or rattan piece and one rust-colored blanket picked up from the fox.
Pairs well with: animal racers in goggles and bedtime drive.

3. Hot rod nursery idea
For a hot rod nursery, go for low cars with big back wheels and drivers who mean business. Here a hedgehog grips the wheel of a lowered hot rod, a brown hare races another, and a raccoon in a leather jacket cruises past in an open-top roadster.
Hot rods sound loud, but these prints are kept to soft browns and greys, so they stay calm enough for a baby. Black iron hardware and a leather pouf nod to the garage without going dark.
Pairs well with: animal racers in goggles and painterly race track.
5. Numbered racer nursery idea
Racing numbers give a wall a sporty feel without any words. The three prints show a cream open-top racer with a 3 on its door, a golden yellow single-seater numbered 5, and a cream sedan marked 7 above a low yellow sports car.
Try these if you'd like the room to grow up with your child. The same prints work just as well in a big-kid room, and the yellow brings sunshine to a north-facing nursery.
Pairs well with: navy race car and checkered flag.

6. Goose road trip nursery idea
A white goose and a little frog turn up in a whole series of soft watercolor-style prints. In one the goose stands by a mint green car with a trunk full of roses and daisies, in another it rides a red pedal car while the frog waves a flag, and in a third both of them lean out of a little yellow car on a country road.
This is the softest car theme in the post and my pick for a gender-neutral room. Pale greens, butter yellow and blush all come straight from the prints, so the bedding is easy to match.
Pairs well with: garage and car wash and country road.

7. Garage and car wash nursery idea
Some parents ask me for a garage themed nursery, and this trio is how I'd do it gently: the frog with a wrench fixing a little car while the goose peers under the hood, the two of them in the middle of a bubbly car wash, then the frog driving off down a forest trail.
Put them in story order from left to right and you have a little picture book on the wall. A pegboard shelf with a few wooden cars finishes the garage idea without any clutter.
Pairs well with: goose road trip and off-road explorer.

8. Bedtime drive nursery idea
Night scenes suit the wall a baby looks at before sleep. There's a little red car parked on a moonlit hill beside a goose, a big brown bear napping on the hood of a blue truck under the stars, and an owl perched on the wheel of an old pedal car.
Dusky blues and soft greys make a sleepy room, and the red car gives it one warm spot. Blackout curtains in a deep blue-grey suit this theme well.
Pairs well with: dapper drivers and country road.

9. Country road nursery idea
These prints are simple scenes of a small car on a long winding road. An orange car rolls past round trees and a big pale sun, a child in a red car drives through black and white hills, and another child with goggles and a flying scarf speeds along a path.
The simple shapes and lots of open sky make these easy to live with. They look great in thin oak frames on a pale wall, with plenty of room left around them.
Pairs well with: goose road trip and animal road trip.

Race car nursery decor ideas
Race cars bring the most energy of any car theme. For race car nursery decor that still feels calm at bedtime, choose prints with soft backgrounds and keep the brightest one over the dresser rather than the crib.
10. Race day nursery idea
If your little one's room needs some speed, start here. An orange race car crosses a checkered finish line, a sleek black car takes a curve under a night sky, and a white sports car zooms across a soft taupe background.
Bold prints like these do best with a plain backdrop. Pick one color from each print, keep the furniture white or light wood, and the wall will carry the whole theme.
Pairs well with: navy race car and animal race team.

11. Animal race team nursery idea
A lion, a bear and a giraffe make a friendly racing team. The lion drives a blue and orange racer across the sand, the bear cruises in a mint car numbered 3 with balloons tied on, and the giraffe squeezes its long neck into a green racer numbered 7.
Animal racers are a sweet middle ground between a jungle room and a race car room. The peach and sand backgrounds keep it warm, and the mint ties it all together.
Pairs well with: race day and animal road trip.

12. Checkered flag nursery idea
Black and white checks are an easy way to say racing. A beagle on a blue tractor waves a giant checkered flag, and two pups ride in an orange car painted with checks.
Strong black and white contrast gives a baby something bold to look at, too. Repeat the checks once, in a small rug or a cushion, and leave the rest plain.
Pairs well with: numbered racer and dog road trip.

13. Painterly race track nursery idea
Loose, painterly brushstroke styling gives these prints a strong sense of motion: a green racer splashing through puddles on a stormy track, a blue racer leaning into a curve by the sea, and a driver's gloved hands on a wooden steering wheel.
These three lean a little more grown-up, so they're a good pick if you want a room that lasts into school age. Hang them a bit lower in the nursery, then raise them later as your child grows.
Pairs well with: hot rod and race day.

Truck and road trip nursery ideas
14. Retro pickup truck nursery idea
Crayon-style pickup trucks, the kind a child might color at the kitchen table, are some of the happiest prints we have. A yellow truck sits inside a green scalloped border, a navy truck inside a turquoise one, and a cherry red truck with red stars on its wheels finishes the set.
Each truck has a dash of leopard print in the back, which gives the set a bit of personality. A row of all three over a changing table is my favorite way to hang them.
Pairs well with: desert cruiser and off-road explorer.
15. Desert cruiser nursery idea
Old cruisers in crayon-style colors bring a bit of the open road west. An orange car with starry seats drives past cacti under a pink sunset, and a lavender car with pink stripes down its hood sits inside a turquoise scalloped border.
For a western or desert nursery, this pair is a lot of fun. Terracotta, lilac and turquoise sound loud together, but on a sandy wall they feel sunny rather than busy.
Pairs well with: retro pickup truck and animal race team.

16. Animal road trip nursery idea
A car full of animals off for a day out never gets old. A giraffe and an elephant head to the beach with surfboards in the back, a koala drives a green truck loaded with eucalyptus, and a fox, a rabbit and a bear play music in a pale blue convertible.
These are cheerful without being loud. Soft blues and greens run through all three, so they hang well together over a dresser or a reading chair.
Pairs well with: dog road trip and country road.

17. Dog road trip nursery idea
For families with a dog at home, these road trip prints feel personal. A golden dog leans out of a car window with its ears flying, a fluffy pup drives a boxy green car, and two puppies drive a yellow cab.
Pick the dog that looks most like yours as the center print. The warm golds and greens suit a calm, gender-neutral room.
Pairs well with: checkered flag and animal road trip.

18. Off-road explorer nursery idea
Off-road prints suit a family that loves camping and dirt roads. A weathered grey 4x4 sits in a loose watercolor style, a goat rides an orange buggy, and a big bear leans against a dusty blue truck in the pines.
Pair it with an outdoors or woodland nursery. Forest green, sand and slate blue keep it grounded, and a wool rug and a tent-shaped shelf add to the adventure.
Pairs well with: retro pickup truck and garage and car wash.

19. Little helpers nursery idea
Helper vehicles give a car room a kind heart. A black and white police car rolls along with a trail of donuts, a cream ambulance van is driven by a smiling nurse with hearts floating behind, and a third print shows a boxy ambulance with a red stripe in soft watercolor tones.
Families of nurses, doctors or officers often love this one. Soft blue with one red accent is all the room needs.
Pairs well with: sweet delivery truck and off-road explorer.

Playful car nursery ideas
20. Sweet delivery truck nursery idea
Not every car nursery has to be about speed. A pink ice cream truck waits in front of a pastel shop, an old pickup carries a load of pink peonies, and a little teal three-wheeled truck carries a load of storybooks.
This is the trio I suggest most for a girl's car nursery, though it works for any baby. Blush, mint and cream are as soft as a car theme gets.
Pairs well with: fruit car and little helpers.

21. Fruit car nursery idea
Cars made of food make toddlers laugh. A parrot drives a pineapple car, a hedgehog rides in half a watermelon, and a mouse in a chef's hat steers a car made from a loaf of bread.
Bright and simple, each print has one big shape on a flat background, so they read clearly from across the room. Teal and sage walls pick up the backgrounds.
Pairs well with: sweet delivery truck and dinosaur driver.
22. Dinosaur driver nursery idea
Two favorite toddler themes in one: a dinosaur in a plaid shirt and a brown hat out for a drive in a little grey car, and a horned dinosaur behind the wheel of a long yellow convertible.
If you can't choose between dinosaurs and cars, this pair settles it. Moss green and mustard keep it earthy, and both prints grow well into a big-kid room.
Pairs well with: fruit car and hot rod.

A car nursery for a girl, a boy, or either
Cars aren't just for boys, and plenty of the prints here prove it. For a softer room for a girl, look at the sweet delivery truck, goose road trip and desert cruiser ideas, where blush, mint and lilac lead. For a baby boy's car nursery, parents often choose the navy race car, retro pickup truck, hot rod or race day rooms.
If you'd like a room that suits any child, the animal racers in goggles, country road, bedtime drive and dog road trip ideas sit right in the middle.
Choosing vintage car nursery decor for the walls
Wall art does most of the work in a car nursery, so it's worth getting the wall right before you buy anything else. My rule of thumb: one large print on its own, or a set of two or three in matching frames. Over a crib or a dresser, a row of three is the easiest layout to get right.
Mixing cars is fine as long as the prints share a look. Three old racers on the same navy read as one set; a racer, a monster truck and a cartoon taxi side by side look like a toy box. All of our car nursery decor comes in the same five sizes, from 8x12 to 24x36 inches (some prints are landscape, so they hang wider than they are tall), with the same frame choices, so a set is simple to build.
Look past the wall too. A road-map rug, a pegboard of wooden cars or a little garage shelf adds to the theme without crowding the room. If cars are one idea among several, my nursery themes guide shows how a car room sits next to dozens of other themes.
Hanging wall art safely in a nursery
Hang wall art with its center about 57 inches from the floor, and leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it (Architectural Digest). In a nursery I bring that a little lower, so the art reads at a seated eye level from the rocker.
Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art near the crib, my own rule is simple: hang it securely and out of reach, using proper hardware rather than tape or one small nail. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC, 2025).
Car nursery questions parents ask
What is vintage car nursery decor?
It's a car room built around old-style cars: open-wheel racers, roadsters, rounded pickups and road trip scenes, usually in softer, faded colors. Prints of animals in leather helmets and goggles, like the animal racers above, are an easy place to start.
What colors go with a car themed nursery?
Take them from your prints. Navy, cream and rust suit vintage racers; warm browns and soft greys suit the sketch-style animal drivers; mint, butter yellow and blush suit the watercolor-style goose prints. Each idea above lists three colors to start with.
Is a car nursery only for a boy?
Not at all. The sweet delivery trucks, the goose road trip and the desert cruisers all lean soft, and a room built on a look or a mood rather than pink or blue suits any baby.
How do I keep a race car nursery from feeling too busy?
Choose one look and stick to it, keep the walls plain, and let two or three prints carry the theme. Put the brightest print over the dresser and something calmer over the crib.
Will a car nursery grow into a toddler room?
Yes, and it's one of the best themes for it. Toddlers love pointing out cars and trucks, so the art stays a favorite. The painterly race track and numbered racer prints in particular look just as good in a big-kid room.
How high should you hang car prints in a nursery?
Hang art with its center about 57 inches from the floor and 6 to 8 inches above furniture (Architectural Digest). Keep the crib empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep), and hang any art near the crib securely and out of reach.
