A gender-neutral nursery works when the theme belongs to every baby, like animals, the moon, the sea or the open sky, and the colors stay warm and calm with just one soft accent. Choose the wall art first, take your three colors from it, and the room suits a girl, a boy or a baby whose name is still a secret.

That's the whole method. Everything below is ideas.

Some parents come to me because they're waiting to find out. Others already know and simply don't want a room that shouts pink or blue. A few want the nursery to last until kindergarten without a full redo. All three end up in the same place: a theme with a story in it and a palette borrowed from the art.

Below are 11 gender-neutral nursery ideas. Nine are grouped by theme and two by color. Each comes with three colors to start you off and three prints that fit it.

Jump to a section:

How do you make a nursery gender neutral?

I use the same four steps in every neutral nursery, whatever the theme turns out to be.

  1. Pick a theme with no team. Animals, nature, sky and sea belong to everyone. A fox or a whale doesn't come with a gender attached, so you're halfway there before you've bought a thing.
  2. Take three colors from the art. One for the walls, one for the big furniture and one small accent. Every idea below lists three.
  3. Keep the base warm. Cream, oat, warm white and natural wood stop a neutral room from feeling cold. Gray-on-gray is where neutral nurseries start to look like waiting rooms.
  4. Let the art carry the personality. Plain bedding and a quiet rug leave the wall to do the talking. One strong set of prints says more than ten small decorations.

If paint is where you're stuck, I've settled that argument separately in my gender-neutral nursery colors post. And if you want to see a whole room put together, my gender-neutral woodland nursery walks through one.

Gender-neutral nursery ideas by theme

1. Woodland nursery idea

The forest is the classic neutral theme for a reason. Foxes, bears and bunnies suit every baby, and the greens and browns that come with them are already calm.

These three keep the forest gentle: a bear and his friends reading by a stream in soft watercolor tones, a fox looking up at a glowing mushroom, and a bunny standing watch among autumn leaves and mushroom clusters. They share a storybook look, which is the trick to any woodland wall. Pick one style, and every animal in it reads as one family.

Colors: moss green, oat and rust

Pairs well with: moon and stars (idea 2) and sage and cream (idea 10).

2. Moon and stars nursery idea

Bedtime is the one thing every baby has in common, so a moon theme is about as neutral as a nursery gets. It also gives you a reason to keep the whole room soft.

A bear cub gazing up at the moon from a flowering forest, a fox sharing a quiet look with a friendly moon, and a smiling moonbeam shining down on a fawn. All three glow without being bright. That matters on the wall you stare at during a 2am feed.

Colors: midnight blue, honey gold and warm white

Pairs well with: woodland (idea 1) and hot air balloons (idea 6).

3. Safari nursery idea

Safari tones, amber, sand and olive, are neutral by nature. The trick is to skip the bright cartoon jungle and go for golden savanna light instead.

A lion sitting with his cub over golden fields toward a hazy skyline, a small explorer standing beside a giraffe above a waterfall, and two meerkats standing tall. The lion and giraffe prints are two of our best sellers in this theme, and I can see why: they feel warm without leaning sweet in either direction.

Colors: savanna gold, sand and olive

Pairs well with: elephants (idea 4) and warm earth tones (idea 11).

4. Elephant nursery idea

If I had to pick one animal for a nursery where nobody knows what's coming, it would be the elephant. Gray, gentle and family-shaped.

A mother elephant leading her two little ones under a soft sunset, a mother and baby reaching for each other with their trunks among flowers, and a clean line-drawing baby elephant with its trunk in the air. The first two are among our best sellers. The third is the pick for a parent who wants something simpler.

Colors: elephant gray, blush sand and cream

Pairs well with: safari (idea 3) and moon and stars (idea 2).

5. Ocean and whale nursery idea

Blue is only a "boy color" if you put a sailboat and an anchor next to it. A whale in deep water belongs to anyone.

A tiny yellow kayak floating between two huge whales, a whale gliding under a tall ship with sunlight coming down through the water, and a whale's tail lifting out of a deep blue sea in soft watercolor tones. The kayak print is one I love for a nursery because it's calm now and turns into a story about courage later.

Colors: deep sea blue, sand and sunny yellow

Pairs well with: hot air balloons (idea 6) and mountains (idea 8).

6. Hot air balloon nursery idea

Balloons bring color without picking a side. They also give the room a gentle sense of "you're going places," which grandparents love.

Two blue balloons drifting over misty mountains, a bunny riding a balloon basket over the hills, and a small bear in the lowest basket of five balloons in sage, blush and cream. That last one is the softest of the three, and it suits the sage-and-blush palette many neutral nurseries end up with.

Colors: sky blue, sage and blush

Pairs well with: moon and stars (idea 2) and ocean (idea 5).

7. Farm nursery idea

Lambs and cows are the gentlest animals I know of. And "baa" and "moo" are usually some of the first animal sounds you'll hear, so the art earns its spot.

A smiling lamb against a deep blue background, two sheep on a fence counting stars under a crescent moon, and three contented cows with their eyes closed. The lamb and cow prints are best sellers, and the three together make a quiet row over a dresser.

Colors: wool cream, barn red and meadow green

Pairs well with: moon and stars (idea 2) and sage and cream (idea 10).

8. Mountains and outdoors nursery idea

For parents who hike, camp or simply miss doing either, a mountain nursery is a quiet promise of trips to come.

A twilight meadow with fireflies among wildflowers and trees, a climber on a cliff above a lake in golden sunset light, and an abstract mountain scene in earthy tones with a river running through. All three are best sellers. The abstract one is the most grown-up of the set and will still look right in a ten-year-old's room.

Colors: pine green, sunset gold and stone

Pairs well with: ocean (idea 5) and warm earth tones (idea 11).

9. Duck and pond nursery idea

Ducks are as neutral as an animal gets. They work in yellow, in green or in soft brown, so you can tune them to your walls.

Two ducks sharing a quiet moment at the pond, mallards lifting off across a golden marsh, and a duck in a little blue cap. The marsh print is a best seller and leans calm and natural; the cap gives the set a smile.

Colors: duckling yellow, reed green and pond blue

Pairs well with: farm (idea 7) and mountains (idea 8).

10. Sage and cream nursery idea

Sage is the color I'm asked about most for neutral nurseries, and it earns that. It's green enough to feel fresh and soft enough to sit behind any print.

A bear handing flowers to a little fox while a bird watches, a wide-eyed bunny among wildflowers in warm earthy tones, and a small owl on a mossy branch looking at a star. All three have sage in them, so they'll match a sage wall without fighting it. Two of them are best sellers.

Colors: sage, cream and honey wood

Pairs well with: woodland (idea 1) and farm (idea 7).

11. Warm earth tones (boho) nursery idea

This is the "boho gender-neutral nursery" so many parents search for: terracotta, mustard and clay instead of pastels. It's warm, a bit grown-up and very easy to live with.

Two long-necked dinosaurs under a soft sun with muted mountains behind them, a sloth hanging from a branch among jungle leaves, and a giraffe striding out of a splash of earthy color. The dinosaur and sloth prints are best sellers, and the dinosaurs surprise people: they're about as calm as a dinosaur can look.

Colors: terracotta, mustard and clay

What size art does a gender-neutral nursery need?

Size the art to the furniture below it, not to the whole wall. I aim for the print, or the group of prints, to cover about two-thirds of the width of the crib or dresser underneath. Smaller than that and it looks lost; wider and it starts to crowd the room.

Three setups work in almost every nursery:

  • One large print over the crib or dresser. It's the simplest look, and one big piece feels calmer than several small ones.
  • A row of three matching prints over the crib or a long dresser. Leave 2 to 3 inches between frames so the three read as one piece.
  • A pair over the changing table or on a small wall beside the glider.

When you hang a set, choose the same size for every print in it, so the frames line up and the gaps stay even. Some of our prints are upright and some are landscape, and each listing shows the sizes that print comes in. If two prints you love come in different shapes, hang them with their centers on one level and keep the gaps the same.

Not sure which size to pick? Cut paper to the sizes you're weighing and tape it to the wall for a day. It's the quickest way to see what fits.

Our frames come in natural oak, walnut, white and black, with kid-safe plexi or real glass. For a neutral nursery I'd choose natural or white oak. Black frames look sharp, but they pull the room toward high contrast, which is the opposite of what most neutral rooms want.

Nervous about choosing one set? Many of our gallery sets let you pick any 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 prints from one look, so they all match. Browse our neutral nursery wall art to start.

Where should the art hang in a nursery?

In a nursery I center wall art about 48 inches from the floor. That's eye level for a parent sitting in the glider, which is where you'll look at it most. The 57 inches you'll often read is meant for living rooms, where people stand (Architectural Digest). Leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it.

Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art near the crib, my rule is simple: hang it securely and out of reach, with proper hardware, never tape or one small nail. For anything that hangs over the crib, choose the framed version with kid-safe plexi, not glass. We offer both, and plexi is the one I'd want above a sleeping baby. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC).

Gender-neutral nursery questions parents ask

What is the best theme for a gender-neutral nursery?

Animals and nature are the easiest, because they don't belong to either side. Woodland, safari, elephants and the moon and stars are the ones I suggest most for neutral rooms. Pick the one with a story you like, then let its art set the colors.

What colors are gender neutral for a nursery?

Warm neutrals as the base, like cream, oat and warm white, with one soft accent such as sage, ochre, dusty blue or terracotta. Natural wood helps too. Each idea above lists three colors, and my gender-neutral nursery colors post goes further.

Does a gender-neutral nursery have to be beige?

No. Beige is one option, not a rule. Sage and cream, ocean blue and sand, or terracotta and mustard are all neutral as long as the theme isn't tied to a gender. The ideas above use plenty of color.

What is a boho gender-neutral nursery?

It's a neutral nursery in warm earth tones: terracotta, mustard, clay and natural textures like rattan and linen. Idea 11 shows the art for it. Keep the prints in the same warm palette and the rest of the room follows.

How many prints should go on a nursery wall?

One large print or a matching row of three suits most nursery walls. Three in a row is the easiest way to fill the wall above a crib or dresser without it looking busy. Keep all three the same size, and aim for the group to cover about two-thirds of the furniture below it.

Can a gender-neutral nursery grow with my child?

Yes, and that's one of the best reasons to choose one. Animal and nature art doesn't feel babyish at five, and the abstract and landscape pieces above still work at ten. Swap the mobile and the crib, keep the wall.
