The best boys' bedroom ideas start with what he loves right now, whether that's baseball, monster trucks, dinosaurs or the night sky, and put it on the walls while the big furniture stays plain. When the interest changes, you change the art, not the whole room.

Ask two brothers what they want in their room and you'll get two different answers: one wants every wall covered in trucks, the other wants the solar system. A year later they may have swapped. A plain bed and dresser, three colors from the art and one strong wall of prints can keep up with all of it.

Below are 14 boys' bedroom ideas, grouped by interest: sports, trucks and cars, dinosaurs, adventure, space and the outdoors. Each one comes with three colors and the prints I'd hang. Every idea works just as well for a girl who loves the same things.

How do you decorate a boy's bedroom?

I use the same four steps whatever he's into.

  1. Start with what he loves now. Ask him this month, because last year's answer may already be out of date. Then narrow it to one interest for the main wall.
  2. Keep the big pieces plain. A wooden bed, a white or wood dresser, and walls in a calm color. A race-car bed is fun for about a year.
  3. Take three colors from the art. One for the walls, one for the bedding and rug, and one small accent. Every idea below lists three.
  4. Give him the final say. Pick two prints you'd both be happy with and let him choose. He'll care about a wall he chose.

For the full plan, from layout and storage to lighting, my Kids' room ideas: how to design a kids' room goes step by step. If he's still a toddler, start with my Toddler boy room ideas.

Boys' bedroom ideas for sports fans

1. Baseball bedroom idea

Few things fill a wall over a twin bed as neatly as a row of three.

An open baseball diamond under dreamy clouds and blue sky, a batter mid-swing in navy and white with cosmic details behind him, and a young player in action against a swirling galaxy of stars. All three are best sellers, and all three are landscape prints, so they line up in one tidy row. The two space ones are a good bridge if he loves baseball and the planets.

Colors: navy, grass green and cream

Pairs well with: space (idea 11) and race cars (idea 6).

2. Basketball bedroom idea

How old he is decides which way I'd go here.

For a younger boy, our basketball court animals set: four soft watercolor-style designs on sunny orange courts, like a panda holding up the ball between a zebra and a giraffe, or a hippo going for a dunk. For an older one, a lone player on an empty court with his back to us, the ball tucked under one arm, in muted teal and charcoal, with a line about never giving up at the bottom. That one could stay up through high school.

Colors: court orange, soft grey and white for the younger room; teal, charcoal and cream for the older one

Pairs well with: soccer and football (idea 3) and dragons and samurai (idea 10).

3. Soccer and football bedroom idea

Pick one look and stick with it; two sports sets in two styles fight each other on one wall.

The striped kit soccer set is clean and flat: seven designs of animals in blue and white striped kits on soft blue, cream and olive, from a fox goalkeeper diving for the ball to an otter on one knee celebrating a goal. The safari football set is softer: four watercolor-style designs, like a lion diving over the line with the ball and a kangaroo leaping for a catch, in grass green, warm tan and soft grey on white.

Colors: royal blue, sand and olive

Pairs well with: baseball (idea 1) and camping (idea 12).

Truck and car bedroom ideas

4. Monster truck bedroom idea

Big tires and flying dirt are the point, so I'd let one wall be loud and keep the rest calm.

A monster truck tearing around a dirt track, tires spinning, and another crossing a moonlit alien landscape under a swirling galaxy of fiery reds and glowing blues, with a tiny astronaut waving. Both are best sellers. If you'd rather have a set, our desert monster trucks show the same blue-and-white police monster truck with red wheels in six designs, from a close-up of one giant muddy tire to the truck flying off a sand dune, in sepia, sand and dusty amber.

Colors: dusty amber, denim blue and fire red

Pairs well with: space (idea 11) and construction (idea 5).

5. Construction bedroom idea

Work trucks last longer than you'd think, because the gentler ones don't look babyish.

A classic dump truck mid-haul in rich earthy tones, and a yellow bulldozer against a soft background of muted greens and blues. Both are best sellers, and both are landscape prints, so they pair neatly over a dresser.

Colors: digger yellow, muted green and earth brown

Pairs well with: monster trucks (idea 4) and fishing (idea 13).

6. Race car bedroom idea

For a boy who counts cars on the drive to school, go retro.

Our retro racing cars set has six designs with a bold ink-line and watercolor-style look in orange, blue, red and green, from a blue No. 20 car rounding a coastal curve to a green No. 18 car spraying water on a stormy track. For one big piece, a sleek race car on a winding track with its headlights glowing against a deep night sky, one of our best sellers.

Colors: racing orange, navy and cream

Pairs well with: baseball (idea 1) and airplanes (idea 9).

Dinosaur bedroom ideas

7. T-rex with a grin idea

For the 5-year-old who roars at breakfast, keep it cheerful.

A T-rex portrait with a wide, toothy grin in bright orange and green, and a dinosaur astronaut in a yellow and white suit exploring a sandy moon with a big planet behind him. Both are best sellers, and the second one is a handy bridge if space comes next.

Colors: bright orange, leaf green and sand

Pairs well with: space (idea 11) and monster trucks (idea 4).

8. Calm dinosaur idea

A T-rex doesn't have to mean neon green and gnashing teeth.

A lone T-rex at the foot of a tall palm, with rolling hills in deep olive, warm amber and dusty sage. A herd of striped long-crested dinosaurs grazing along a winding river in deep plum, amber and muted sage. And three friendly dinosaurs looking up at a starry sky. All three are best sellers, and the first two will still look right when he's 12.

Colors: olive, amber and dusty sage

Pairs well with: camping (idea 12) and mountains (idea 14).

Adventure bedroom ideas

9. Airplane bedroom idea

Old planes have a look boys grow into rather than out of.

A vintage fighter plane flying through a blue sky, a best seller in a landscape shape that sits well over a bed. For a set, our vintage blue airplanes come in 11 designs in steel blue and misty grey, from a fighter skimming over a rough sea to a big four-engine plane crossing a desert mesa.

Colors: steel blue, misty grey and cream

Pairs well with: race cars (idea 6) and mountains (idea 14).

10. Dragons and samurai idea

Read him one good book about a quest and he'll want a castle on the wall.

A brave child and his dragon looking out from a high perch toward distant castles and winding rivers, one of our best sellers. For an older boy, our red skeleton samurai set: seven ink-style designs on cream with a single splash of red, from a samurai sitting down to a cup of steaming tea to one walking off through the rain. It's a little funny and a little cool, a hard mix to find for a 10-year-old.

Colors: castle grey, dragon green and red

Pairs well with: basketball (idea 2) and airplanes (idea 9).

Space bedroom ideas

11. Astronaut and moon idea

The night sky works at 4 and still works at 14.

An astronaut standing on a crescent moon with stars all around, one of our best sellers. Next to it, our space suit animals set: 15 designs of animals in white space suits and bubble helmets on soft taupe, in a light sketchbook style, from a mouse holding a striped balloon to a raccoon peeking over a moon rock. The set's taupe and rusty orange are a nice change from the usual navy.

Colors: soft taupe, rusty orange and pale sky blue

Pairs well with: T-rex with a grin (idea 7) and baseball (idea 1).

12. Camping bedroom idea

A tent, a fire and a sky full of stars are the whole dream for a lot of boys.

A grown-up and a child on a quiet hilltop, watching a streak of light cross a starry woodland sky, and a campfire glowing beside a calm lake ringed with evergreens. Both are best sellers, and both are landscape prints that pair well over a bed.

Colors: pine green, night blue and campfire orange

Pairs well with: fishing (idea 13) and calm dinosaurs (idea 8).

13. Fishing bedroom idea

A still lake and a line in the water make one of the easiest themes to sleep under.

A child fishing from a boat on a still lake with tall mountains and golden light behind him, and a boy with his fishing rod and his dog, in warm earth tones with a painterly feel. Both are best sellers.

Colors: lake blue, golden ochre and pine

Pairs well with: camping (idea 12) and mountains (idea 14).

14. Mountain and bear idea

For a boy who'd rather be outdoors, a wall of peaks and wildflowers is the next best thing.

Our blue mountain bears set has nine watercolor-style designs in pink sky, blue mountains, warm brown and meadow green, from two cubs climbing a mossy log to a bear sniffing purple lupines. Pick three for over the bed, or six for a long wall.

How do our boys' room sets look side by side?

My rule for a wall with more than one set is simple: mix subjects, never styles. A watercolor dinosaur and a charcoal-sketch basketball player can share a room, but not a row.

The easiest way to give a boy with three hobbies one wall is our checkerboard sets. Four of our gallery sets have the same border built into the art itself, a red border with a checkered edge, and all four have tomato red, cream and black in their palettes:

  • Vintage motorcycle bears: brown bears in goggles on old motorcycles, one with a squirrel in the sidecar.
  • Checkerboard balloon owls: a little owl in an aviator cap riding a numbered hot air balloon.
  • Checkerboard surfing calico: a calico cat in blue goggles riding a yellow surfboard.
  • Champion giraffe golfers: giraffe golfers, from one driving a golf cart to a champion with a gold trophy in its mouth.

The four sets come in the same sizes, so order one print from each in one size and they hang as a single row: a bear on a motorcycle, an owl in a balloon, a cat on a wave, a giraffe with a trophy. Different subjects, one family. Three of the four are best sellers.

The same rule works with any of our sets. Each listing names its style, like watercolor, pencil sketch or flat illustration, so put only matching styles in one row and let the subjects change.

What size art does a boy's bedroom need?

Size the art to the furniture below it, not to the whole wall. I aim for the print, or the group of prints, to cover about two-thirds of the width of the bed or dresser underneath. Smaller than that and it looks lost; wider and it crowds the room.

Three setups work in almost every boy's room:

  • One large print over the bed. Simple, calm, and the easiest to swap when he moves on from trucks.
  • A row of three matching prints over a twin bed or a long dresser, with 2 to 3 inches between frames.
  • A pair over a desk or a reading chair.

Choose the same size for every print in a set so the frames line up and the gaps stay even. Some of our prints are upright and some are landscape, and each listing shows the sizes that print comes in. If two prints you love come in different shapes, hang them with their centers on one level and keep the gaps the same.

Before you commit, cut paper to the sizes you're weighing and tape it to the wall for a day.

Our frames come in natural oak, walnut, white and black, with kid-safe plexi or real glass. In a boy's room I'd choose plexi, because something will get thrown at that wall. Walnut and black suit the older looks, like the samurai and the lone basketball player. Natural oak suits nearly everything else.

Many of our gallery sets let you pick any 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 prints from one look, all the same size. Browse our gallery wall sets to start.

How high should art hang in a boy's room?

The usual advice is to center art about 57 inches from the floor and leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it (Architectural Digest). That 57 is for grown-ups standing in a living room. In his room I center art about 48 inches from the floor, and it can stay there as he grows. Over a toddler bed, choose the framed version with kid-safe plexi.

Over a bed or dresser, keep the 6 to 8 inch gap above the furniture and let that set the height. Hang every frame with proper hardware, never tape or one small nail, and anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall (CPSC).

Boys' bedroom questions parents ask

What should be in a boy's bedroom?

A bed, storage he can reach on his own, a lamp for reading, and one wall of art he chose. Add a desk or a clear surface once homework starts. Everything else is extra.

What is a good theme for a boy's room?

Whatever he loves right now, kept on the walls and the bedding so it can change. If you want a theme that lasts, the outdoors, space and the calmer dinosaur prints are the ones I'd bet on.

How do I make a boy's room look older?

Swap cartoon prints for sketch looks, landscapes and silhouettes, and switch to walnut or black frames. The lone basketball player, the samurai set and the calm dinosaurs above all suit a 10-year-old.

How do I decorate a boy's room with more than one interest?

Give each hobby its own print but keep one style and one palette across the row. The checkerboard sets in the side by side section were made for exactly that.

How many prints should go over a boy's bed?

One large print or a matching row of three suits most twin beds. Aim for the art to cover about two-thirds of the bed's width, and keep every print in a set the same size.

Do these boys' bedroom ideas work for girls?

Yes. Sports, trucks, dinosaurs, space and the outdoors belong to every kid. Pick by interest and let the colors come from the art.
