Most woodland nurseries go wrong in the same quiet way. A fox print comes first, then a bear from a different shop, then a deer, then an owl, and before long the wall looks like a crowded forest instead of a calm one.
The fix is to choose one look and let every animal share it. Below are 26 woodland nursery ideas in four groups: by animal, for a girl, for a boy, and by look and mood. Each comes with three colors and the prints that make it work.
To browse more, our woodland nursery decor collection has more than 250 woodland prints in one place.

How to put a woodland nursery together
I follow the same four steps for every woodland room, whichever animals end up on the wall.
- Pick the look, then the animals. Soft watercolor, pencil sketch, folk art or bold color: settle the style first, and any mix of foxes, bears and deer will read as one family.
- Take three colors from the art. One for the walls, one for the big pieces and one accent. Each idea below lists three to start you off.
- Bring in the forest with materials. Oak or walnut furniture, a linen curtain and a soft wool or cotton rug do more for the theme than one more animal.
- Let one surface carry the pattern. If the art is busy, keep the bedding plain. If you go for woodland wallpaper, keep the art simple.
Woodland nursery decor by animal
1. Fox nursery idea
That rust-orange coat gives a woodland room its accent color before you've bought a thing. Here there's a fox trotting across deep forest green, a mother fox and her kit in a mountain meadow full of wildflowers, and a quiet red fox sitting in soft watercolor tones.
Pull the rust into one or two small things, like a cushion or a basket, and keep the big pieces in cream and wood. The green print makes a strong anchor over a dresser.
Pairs well with: autumn woodland and wildflower meadow.

2. Bear nursery idea
From bold to tender, the range here is wide. One is a big friendly bear face built from layered earth-tone strokes. The other two are softer: a cream mother bear sheltering her cub under a leaf, and a mother bear holding pink flowers while her cub leans in.
A mother-and-cub print is my favorite thing to hang over a crib, because it says what the room is for without a single word. Warm browns and cream keep it cozy rather than dark.
Pairs well with: mountain cub and sleepy woodland.

3. Deer nursery idea
A smiling stag with wide antlers on peach, a doe standing over her spotted fawn, and two fawns touching noses in a birch forest: these three bring the quiet.
Peach and soft brown suit a room that leans a little sweet, while the birch forest print stays neutral. If you only hang one, make it the doe and fawn.
Pairs well with: flower crown woodland and pastel enchanted forest.

4. Bunny nursery idea
For a woodland room that feels like a storybook garden, rabbits are hard to beat. Two white rabbits hop along a mossy log in a green forest, another pair stands on tiptoe watching a butterfly, and a brown hare hides among white daisies.
Deep green and full of detail, they look best with plain walls in pale sage or warm white. One set of three over the crib is plenty.
Pairs well with: flower crown woodland and vintage storybook.

5. Owl nursery idea
Of all the forest animals, the owl is the one that belongs to bedtime. These three are calm: a barn owl on a birch branch with pale leaves, a round brown owl on a mossy branch, and a winking owl holding a lantern inside a wreath of flowers.
Owls look good in pairs or in a row of three, and their browns and creams go with any wood crib. Add a soft blue somewhere for a nighttime feel.
Pairs well with: moonlit woodland and neutral woodland.

6. Hedgehog nursery idea
Small and a little funny, hedgehogs are easy to love. One curls up under a big speckled mushroom, one hugs a shiny red apple with a snail on top, and two smiling hedgehogs dance hand in hand.
The apple print gives you a bright accent, so this is a good pick if you want a woodland room with a bit more color. Mushroom-print bedding finishes it nicely.
Pairs well with: autumn woodland and funny woodland.

7. Raccoon nursery idea
A little mischief never hurt a nursery. One raccoon crosses a creek on stepping stones with a snack in its paws, another sits under a red spotted mushroom in the rain, and a third rests by a forest brook in soft sketch-style lines.
Grey and creek blue are the colors to repeat here, which makes this a nice choice for a cooler, calmer room. The rainy mushroom print has the most going on, so give it the middle spot.
Pairs well with: hedgehog and sketch-style woodland.

8. Squirrel nursery idea
Want movement on the wall? Try squirrels. One leaps through pine branches, a plump red squirrel holds an acorn, and another clings to a tree trunk above a row of pine fronds.
Red squirrels and warm wood are a natural match. They're a good fit above a changing table, where a little action gives a wriggly baby something to look at.
Pairs well with: fox and autumn woodland.

9. Wolf nursery idea
For a wilder, older feel, look to the wolf. A grey wolf walks a misty hillside under a pink sky, another howls beside a wide-eyed owl among pine branches, and a calm wolf carries a small blue flower.
These lean toward a boy's room, or a room you want to grow with your child. Pair the misty print with slate or navy and the room feels like a mountain evening.
Pairs well with: mountain cub and moonlit woodland.

Woodland nursery decor for a girl
For a girl's nursery, these are the four woodland looks I'd start with. They keep the forest animals and add flowers, fairies and dusty pinks, without turning the whole room pink.
10. Fairy woodland nursery idea
Add a few wings and the woodland becomes a story. Fairies dance around a deer in a pale flowered meadow, three more catch stars beside a fawn on deep forest green, and a tiny tea party happens on a leaf in a blossoming tree.
The dark green prints are dramatic in the best way. Hang them on a warm white wall with blush bedding so the room still feels soft.
Pairs well with: pink woodland and pastel enchanted forest.

11. Pink woodland nursery idea
Pink and woodland go together better than you'd think. A spotted fawn stands among birch trees on a blush ground, a pink squirrel holds an acorn among tiny flowers, and a hedgehog sleeps in a glowing forest of pink and lilac.
The trick is to keep the pinks dusty, not bright. Pair them with oak furniture and one sage green piece and the room feels grown-up enough to last.
Pairs well with: flower crown woodland and fairy woodland.

12. Flower crown woodland nursery idea
Put a crown of daisies on a forest animal and it looks dressed for a party. Here it's a fawn on powder blue, a white bunny under willow branches, and a mother bear and cub sharing one crown of flowers.
Daisies are an easy detail to repeat in a cushion, a mobile or a rug. The blue fawn print brings in a cool color that keeps all that sweetness in balance.
Pairs well with: bunny and wildflower meadow.

13. Wildflower meadow nursery idea
If you'd like the forest to open into a meadow, these prints do it. A brown bear sits among pink wildflowers, a pale fox peeks through tall blossoms, and three white rabbits play in clover and bright flowers.
Wildflowers give you permission to use more than one accent color. Choose one from the prints, say a soft pink, and leave the others in the art.
Pairs well with: bear and flower crown woodland.

Woodland nursery decor for a boy
For a boy's woodland nursery, I like to add a little adventure: something to drive, something to row, a mountain to climb. All three ideas still sit happily in a calm room.
14. Woodland road trip nursery idea
Animals at the wheel are hard to resist. A fox in goggles drives a classic roadster, a raccoon steers an old-fashioned car, and a brown bear sits on a blue truck in the pines with an apple in hand.
The two car prints are soft taupe and brown, so they stay calm from across the room. Add the blue truck print and repeat its blue in a blanket.
Pairs well with: mountain cub and lake and river woodland.

15. Lake and river woodland nursery idea
Weekends at the lake? Bring them into the nursery. A bear fishes from a rowboat on a bright mountain lake, two foxes float in a red paper boat, and a stag rows a wooden boat by lantern light while fish swim below.
Navy and lake blue keep the room cool and restful. The red boat print gives you one warm accent to echo in a toy or a pillow.
Pairs well with: woodland road trip and wolf.

16. Mountain cub nursery idea
Mountains and pine forests make a woodland room feel bigger. Two bear cubs climb a mossy log below misty blue peaks, a lone bear walks through blue fog among tall pines, and another wanders a lakeshore under circling birds.
A shared misty blue palette means they hang easily as a set. Pale grey walls and a chunky knit blanket finish the look.
Pairs well with: wolf and woodland road trip.

17. Sleepy woodland nursery idea
Sleeping animals belong over a crib. Two white rabbits nap inside a hollow log, a cub rides curled up on its mother's back, and a smiling fox with closed eyes looks completely content.
Nothing in these prints asks for attention, which is what you want in a room built for naps. Keep the lighting low and warm.
Pairs well with: bear and moonlit woodland.

18. Moonlit woodland nursery idea
Night scenes give a woodland room a deep blue anchor. An owl perches on a branch in front of a big moon, two stags stand on a hill under a full moon, and a bear reads a book by a waterfall at night.
Deep blue works well on one accent wall behind the crib, with the other walls kept cream. Brass or warm wood keeps it from feeling cold.
Pairs well with: owl and sleepy woodland.

19. Pastel enchanted forest nursery idea
For a dreamier take, these prints fill the forest with lilac, peach and pink light: a rabbit drinking from a flowery stream, an owl on a branch above a meadow, and a spotted fawn under a sunset sky.
Everything here is soft and glowing, with thick brushstroke styling that gives the prints painterly depth. Use pale lilac or peach on the walls and keep the furniture white.
Pairs well with: fairy woodland and deer.

20. Woodland band nursery idea
Some of the forest has formed a band. A fox plays the violin while a rabbit drums on a log, a bear bows a cello with a mouse friend, and a raccoon squeezes an accordion next to a banjo-playing squirrel.
Music prints make a sweet link if lullabies are part of your bedtime routine. Their cream backgrounds keep them calm enough for a nursery.
Pairs well with: hedgehog and neutral woodland.

21. Autumn woodland nursery idea
Falling leaves bring the warmest colors in the forest. A grey fox watches a single leaf drift down, a hedgehog curls up in a bed of oak leaves, and a raccoon dozes in a wheelbarrow full of gold.
This is a cozy choice for a fall or winter baby. Rust, ochre and cream work on almost any wall, and the sketch-style fox and hedgehog keep it from feeling busy.
Pairs well with: fox and squirrel.

22. Woodland friends nursery idea
Can't pick one animal? Don't. These folk-art style prints gather the whole crew: a fox, a bear, a hedgehog and a rabbit around a basket of berries, a second berry-basket gang in warm greens, and an owl reading to its friends by lantern light.
Bold outlines and earthy colors make these strong enough for a big wall. They also suit a playroom later, so this idea grows with your child.
Pairs well with: fox and woodland band.

23. Neutral woodland nursery idea
In a room of cream, oat and wood, simple animals work best. These three are a sitting fox in soft orange and cream, a big friendly bear face in chocolate brown, and a tan rabbit on a plain ground.
Plain backgrounds let these prints hang anywhere, and they look modern next to light oak and linen. If you're still deciding between a girl's room and a boy's room, start here.
Pairs well with: woodland band and sketch-style woodland.
24. Sketch-style woodland nursery idea
The quietest way to do woodland is in pencil-sketch style. A rabbit looks up at a butterfly on a twig, a fox kit peeks out of a hollow log, and a fawn sleeps curled between birch roots and ferns.
With almost no color, these prints suit a nursery where the walls or the bedding carry the color. Black or walnut frames sharpen the lines.
Pairs well with: neutral woodland and vintage storybook.

25. Vintage storybook nursery idea
These prints look like pages from an old picture book. A rabbit in a vest waters his seedlings, another posts a letter in a country mailbox, and two rabbits sit inside a floral oval above a line of script-style lettering.
Sepia tones love an old dresser and a little lace. Hang all three in matching walnut frames for a look that feels handed down.
Pairs well with: bunny and sketch-style woodland.

26. Funny woodland nursery idea
A few forest animals have dressed up for the occasion: a fox in round green sunglasses, a hedgehog in tiny blue shades, and a grinning beaver in a grey newsboy cap, all on the same sky blue.
Expect grandparents to laugh at these, and expect them to last into the toddler years. Because they share one background, any two or three hang together as a set.
Pairs well with: hedgehog and woodland road trip.

Woodland wallpaper or woodland wall art?
A wallpapered wall of trees behind the crib can look lovely, but it is a big commitment. It is harder to change once your baby becomes a toddler with opinions, and a busy pattern leaves little room for anything else on that wall.
Framed prints give you the same forest feel and are easy to swap as your child grows. If you love wallpaper, keep it to one wall in a quiet tree or leaf pattern and hang the art on a plain wall nearby.
If your wallpaper is bold, my forest nursery rug post shows how to keep the floor from fighting it.
Choosing woodland nursery decor for the walls
Start with the wall above the crib or the dresser, since it is the one you see first when you walk in. One large print works, but a matching set of two or three is easier to get right, and it lets you bring in more than one animal.
Mixing animals is fine as long as the style and background match. A fox, a bear and a deer in the same soft watercolor look like a family; the same three in three different styles look like a sticker sheet.
Most of the prints in this post come in the same five sizes, from 8x12 to 24x36 inches, with matching frame options, so a set is simple to build from our woodland nursery decor.
Want to see a whole room? My gender-neutral woodland nursery walks through one you can shop, down to the paint code. And the woodland section of my nursery themes guide shows how a woodland theme sits next to 70 others.
Hanging wall art safely in a nursery
Hang wall art with its center about 57 inches from the floor, and leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it (Architectural Digest). In a nursery I bring that a little lower, so the art reads at a seated eye level from the glider.
Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art near the crib, my own rule is simple: hang it securely and out of reach, using proper hardware rather than tape or one small nail. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC, 2025).
Woodland nursery questions parents ask
What colors go with a woodland nursery?
Take them from the art. Sage and moss green, warm wood browns, cream and one rust accent is the classic mix. For a softer room add dusty pink or lilac, and for a cooler one add misty blue. Every idea above lists three colors to start with.
Is a woodland nursery gender neutral?
It is one of the easiest themes to keep neutral, because forest animals and greens suit any baby. The neutral, sketch-style and owl ideas are the most neutral here. Add flowers and fairies for a girl, or boats and mountains for a boy.
What woodland nursery decor works for a girl?
Keep the forest animals and add flowers, fairies and soft pinks. The fairy woodland, pink woodland, flower crown and wildflower meadow ideas are where I would start, with dusty pinks next to sage and oak so the room never turns too sweet.
Which animals go in a woodland nursery?
Foxes, bears, deer, rabbits and owls are the classic five, with hedgehogs, raccoons, squirrels and wolves for variety. Choose one or two as the leads and keep the rest in the same style.
How many prints should go on a woodland nursery wall?
One large print or a matching set of two or three suits most nursery walls. A row of three over the crib or dresser is the easiest way to fill the wall without it looking busy.
How high should you hang woodland prints in a nursery?
Hang art with its center about 57 inches from the floor and 6 to 8 inches above furniture (Architectural Digest). Keep the crib empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep), and hang any art near the crib securely and out of reach.
Should I choose woodland wallpaper or wall art?
Either can work, but wall art is easier to change as your child grows. If you want both, keep the wallpaper to one wall in a quiet pattern and hang the prints somewhere plain.
