Somewhere around the first birthday, "what does the cow say?" turns into the question you ask twenty times a day. A farm themed nursery gets there early. Cows, lambs, piglets and a little red barn give a baby something friendly to look at now and a whole barnyard to name later.
Below are 26 farm nursery ideas in four groups: by animal, by look, farm life and by mood. Each one comes with three colors and the prints that make it work. If you'd rather see everything at once, our farm nursery decor collection has about 100 prints in one place.

How to plan a farm nursery
Here is the order I work in for every farm room, from a single calf to a full barnyard.
- Choose your farm. A storybook farm, a quiet pasture and a farmhouse are three different rooms. Decide which one you're picturing before you shop.
- Take three colors from one print. One for the walls, one for the big pieces and one accent. Each idea below lists three to start you off.
- One animal or the whole barnyard. A single animal makes a calm, simple room. A mix of animals is more playful, and it works best when the prints share one background color.
- Let the art be the farm. Keep the crib, rug and curtains plain. Gingham or a little wood is plenty; the animals on the wall carry the theme.
Farm animal nursery ideas
1. Cow nursery idea
Three calves squeezed cheek to cheek in watercolor tones, a spotted calf nosing through pale daisies, and a brown calf in a bow tie on dusty pink. The cow prints run from sweet to a little dapper.
Brown and white spots are easy to live with, because they sit next to cream, sage or pink without a fight. Hang the wide trio print over the crib and give the two portraits their own wall.
Pairs well with: highland cow and soft pink farm.

2. Highland cow nursery idea
Shaggy fringes and long horns give Highland cows a teddy-bear look that suits a baby room. Here's a calf lying in tall golden grass, a blonde Highland cow with a red gingham bow on pink, and a ginger cow drinking from a winding stream.
Their coats bring warm ginger and oat tones, so they work in a neutral nursery as well as a rustic one. On a small wall, one big Highland portrait carries the room alone.
Pairs well with: cow and quiet pasture.

3. Sheep and lamb nursery idea
Few farm animals feel as calm over a crib as a lamb. One stands on a hill of pale wildflowers, one leaps across green grass in a red gingham scarf, and one wears a pink bow among tiny flowers.
All three share a soft pink and cream palette, so they hang together as a set without any effort. White furniture and a pale pink wall finish the room.
Pairs well with: bedtime farm and soft pink farm.

4. Pig nursery idea
Piglets bring a bit of giggle to the wall: a sleepy pink piglet in a bow tie, two pigs dancing arm in arm, and a little pig trotting through blue cornflowers.
Pink pigs pair well with sage or soft blue, which keeps a pig nursery from tipping into all-pink. The cornflower print is the one that adds the blue.
Pairs well with: barnyard friends and funny farm.
5. Horse and pony nursery idea
For a calmer farm room, horses bring warm browns and long, easy lines. You'll find a spotted pony mid-trot, a mother horse nuzzling her foal, and a spotted foal curled up in a nest of grass on pink.
The mother and foal print tells the story of a first baby in one picture. Pair it with the trotting pony for a wall that suits a girl or a boy.
Pairs well with: donkey and quiet pasture.

6. Donkey nursery idea
Donkeys are the underdogs of the farm, which is exactly why I like them in a nursery. One leans over a wooden gate in a pink bow tie, one stands among wildflowers in soft grey, and one rests under a blossoming tree.
Grey donkeys bring a cool, quiet color that balances the warm browns of a farm room. They suit white walls, pale wood and a green plant or two.
Pairs well with: horse and pony and wildflower farm.

7. Goat nursery idea
Baby goats jump, climb and dance, and these prints catch them mid-mischief: a white kid on a mossy rock, two goats waltzing with rosy cheeks, and a kid in a pink bow kicking up its heels.
Goats look best in a light, airy room with plenty of white around them. Let the dancing pair be the funny one in a set of three.
Pairs well with: sheep and lamb and funny farm.
8. Chick and hen nursery idea
Little yellow chicks put spring on the wall. Two peek out of a woven basket tied with a gingham bow, three huddle under a pink flower like an umbrella, and a white hen in a bow tie perches on a fence.
Yellow and pink make a cheerful pair for a girl's room, and the yellow alone works for a gender-neutral one. Keep the rest of the room soft so the chicks stay the bright spot.
Pairs well with: duck and goose and wildflower farm.
9. Rooster nursery idea
The rooster is the farm's alarm clock, which is a little ironic in a room built for sleep. One crows from a fence above rolling hills, one stands tall on hay bales at sunset, and one perches on a rock beside a stream full of wildflowers.
These carry the boldest colors in this post, all oranges, purples and golds. Use them on one wall, paint the rest a warm white, and the room glows without feeling loud.
Pairs well with: bold folk farm and barn.

10. Duck and goose nursery idea
Ducks and geese love a parade. A mother duck leads her ducklings through the grass, a white goose in a pink bow tie walks through a flower patch, and a line of geese waddles down a farm lane past an old barn.
White birds settle easily into any nursery. Pair the pink goose with the lamb prints for a girl, or the barn lane print with the tractors for a boy.
Pairs well with: chick and hen and barn.

11. Vintage farm truck nursery idea
An old farm truck is my favorite way to add vintage charm. A cow, a sheep and a goat ride in the back of one, a spotted goat climbs onto the hood of another, and a donkey pokes its head out of the driver's door.
All three are in soft sepia browns, so they hang well together in plain wood frames. They're quiet enough for a baby and fun enough for the kid who later wants nothing but trucks.
Pairs well with: tractor and sepia sketch farmhouse.

12. Blue and white farm nursery idea
If you love blue and white china, look closely at these. A farmhouse sits at the bend of a country road, a stone cottage has a horse by the garden gate, and a horse looks out of its stable, all in one deep inky blue on cream.
Sharing one color makes this the easiest set in the post to hang together. Add white bedding and a blue gingham or ticking stripe, and you have a classic country nursery.
Pairs well with: sepia sketch farmhouse and bedtime farm.

13. Soft pink farm nursery idea
Pink backgrounds turn farm animals into a soft girl's nursery without a single ruffle. There's a calf in a flower crown, a cow in a bow tie with its eyes closed, and a pink piglet in a gingham scarf sitting in clover.
Brown cow spots keep all that pink from getting too sweet. Warm wood, cream bedding and one sage-green plant finish it.
Pairs well with: cow and chick and hen.
14. Bold folk farm nursery idea
For parents who want color from day one, these folk-art style prints go big: a yellow bird on a hill of bright flowers, a red barn and windmill in green hills, and a farmhouse under a crescent moon.
Flat shapes and strong color read clearly from across the room. Paint the walls a soft white and let the prints bring every bit of color.
Pairs well with: rooster and barn.

15. Quiet pasture nursery idea
Some farm prints are mostly sky and grass, and that's their charm. Sheep dot a green hillside, horses graze far off under a pale pink sky, and two ginger cows stand in a meadow of white flowers.
Choose these if you want a farm room that doesn't shout farm. The soft greens and creams make a calm nursery that still works when your child is ten.
Pairs well with: sage green farm and highland cow.

16. Neutral minimal farm nursery idea
Each animal here is kept simple and set on plain cream: a fluffy sheep, a pink pig lying down, and a little goat standing on a rock, all in soft watercolor tones.
Plenty of empty background makes them easy to hang in a row of three. They're my pick for a gender-neutral nursery with white oak and linen.
Pairs well with: sepia sketch farmhouse and sheep and lamb.
17. Sage green farm nursery idea
Green is the color of a farm in summer, and these prints use it on every inch. A line of sheep crosses the top of a hill, a flock gathers on a deep green field, and Highland cows wander a valley of rolling hills.
Sage is one of the easiest nursery colors to live with, and these prints give you three shades of it at once. Match the wall to the palest one.
Pairs well with: quiet pasture and neutral minimal farm.

18. Sepia sketch farmhouse nursery idea
A farmhouse nursery leans on old wood, linen and simple shapes, and pencil-sketch style art fits right in. A hen sits on her nest in black ink-line work, a goose in a bonnet and shawl stands in tall grass, and a Highland cow stares out of a charcoal-sketch style portrait.
Black and brown line art looks sharp in a dark frame. Against white shiplap or a warm white wall, the room reads farmhouse straight away.
Pairs well with: vintage farm truck and blue and white farm.
19. Storybook farm nursery idea
Busy, happy farm scenes are made for pointing at and naming. A smiling farmer stands with his cows and sheep, a farm stand sells pumpkins and apples next to a red barn, and chickens peck along a flowery lane to a white cottage.
There's so much to spot in each one that they grow with your child, from first words to first stories. Hang them near the chair where you read together.
Pairs well with: barnyard friends and child on the farm.

Farm life nursery ideas
20. Tractor nursery idea
Tractors are how a farm nursery wins over the kid who'd rather have trucks. A green tractor crosses a golden wheat field under a big blue sky, a red tractor waits by a lily pond and a barn, and a duck in a cap drives a blue tractor with a full trailer.
Tractor prints carry the theme into the toddler years, when wheels start to matter more than animals. The wheat field print brings in a golden yellow that's easy to repeat in a blanket.
Pairs well with: vintage farm truck and barn.

21. Barn nursery idea
A barn gives a farm room its sense of place. A smiling lamb sits in a meadow in front of a red barn, a rooster steps out of an open barn door into golden light, and hens scratch in the grass beside a weathered wooden shed.
The warm wood tones in these prints sit nicely with a wood crib and a cream rug. Choose the red barn if you want one bright accent in an otherwise soft room.
Pairs well with: storybook farm and tractor.

22. Barnyard friends nursery idea
Can't pick one animal? You don't have to. One print lines up five farm animals like a class photo, another groups a spotted cow with a pig and a hen, and the third has two piglets riding on a cow beside an old truck.
A mix of animals is the classic farm nursery, and it gives a toddler plenty to name. Keep the backgrounds cream so the set reads as one.
Pairs well with: storybook farm and pig.

23. Child on the farm nursery idea
Prints with a child in them make the farm feel like home. A girl walks a fence line with piglets in a field of daisies, a little girl twirls with two lambs in yellow flowers, and a little boy rides on the back of a fluffy sheep among red flowers.
They feel like the first page of a picture book. Over a reading chair, they make bedtime stories feel like part of the room.
Pairs well with: storybook farm and wildflower farm.

24. Funny farm nursery idea
A few of these animals clearly know they're being looked at: a cow peeking in from the edge of the frame, a black and white cow in yellow sunglasses, and a curly sheep in pink heart-shaped glasses.
Funny prints are the ones toddlers ask about, so they earn their place long after the baby years. Mix one with two calmer prints and the wall stays relaxed.

25. Bedtime farm nursery idea
Counting sheep belongs in a nursery. Two lambs sit on a fence under a crescent moon and a puffy cloud, a smiling sheep beams from a deep blue background, and a sheep leaps through the clouds under a rainbow and a gold moon.
Navy and gold set a sleepy mood without making the room dark. Use navy on one accent wall or just in a blanket, and keep the rest cream.
Pairs well with: sheep and lamb and blue and white farm.

26. Wildflower farm nursery idea
In these, the farm sits in a field of flowers: a little cottage on a hill with a girl and her chickens among white daisies, a speckled hen nesting in pink wildflowers, and a lamb on a flowery cliff above the sea.
Wildflowers soften a farm theme for a girl, but the greens and creams keep it gentle enough for any baby. A plain cream rug and pale wood let the flowers stay the star.
Pairs well with: chick and hen and child on the farm.

A farm nursery for a girl, a boy, or either
Farm animals suit any baby, so most of these ideas work for a girl or a boy. For a girl, the soft pink farm, chick and hen, wildflower farm and lamb rooms lean softest. For a boy, parents often go for the tractor, vintage farm truck, blue and white farm or rooster rooms.
Keeping it a surprise, or just want a room that suits any child? The quiet pasture, neutral minimal farm, sage green farm and barnyard friends ideas sit right in the middle.
Choosing farm nursery decor for the walls
Wall art does most of the work in a farm room, so I plan the wall before anything else. One large print on its own, or a set of two or three in matching frames, covers most nursery walls. Over a crib or a dresser, three in a row is the easiest layout to get right.
Mixing animals is fine as long as the backgrounds match. A calf, a lamb and a piglet on the same cream read as one set; the same three on three different backgrounds start to look like a petting zoo.
Our farm animal nursery decor is a good place to build a set like that, and our farm wall art adds the barns, tractors and farmhouse scenes.
If farm is one idea among several, the farm section of my nursery themes guide shows how it sits next to 70 other themes.
The rest of the farm nursery: wood, fabric and light
A farm room feels right when the furniture looks a little like it could live in a farmhouse. A wood or white crib, a white dresser and a simple rocker do more for the theme than any barn-shaped shelf.
- Wood. Light oak, pine or a whitewashed finish brings the barn indoors. One wood piece is enough if the rest is white.
- Fabric. Gingham, ticking stripes and plain linen are the classic farm fabrics. Use them on curtains, a pillow on the rocker or a basket liner, and keep the crib bare.
- Rug. A soft wool or low-pile cotton rug in cream or oat is kind to crawling knees and gives the room a field-like base.
- Light. A warm-toned lamp with a linen or rattan shade and blackout curtains behind lighter ones will cover both naps and night feeds.
- A little green. A potted plant up high on a shelf or a dried wheat bunch in a vase adds the outdoors without adding clutter.
Hanging wall art safely in a nursery
Hang wall art with its center about 57 inches from the floor, and leave 6 to 8 inches between the bottom of the frame and any furniture below it (Architectural Digest). In a nursery I bring that a little lower, so the art reads at a seated eye level from the rocker.
Keep the crib itself empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep). For art near the crib, my own rule is simple: hang it securely and out of reach, using proper hardware rather than tape or one small nail. Anchor dressers and bookcases to the wall too (CPSC, 2025).
Farm nursery questions parents ask
What colors go with a farm themed nursery?
Start from the prints. Cream, warm brown and sage suit cows and Highland cattle, soft pink and cream suit lambs and piglets, and barn red with wheat gold suits tractors and barns. Each idea above lists three colors to begin with.
Is a farm nursery gender neutral?
Yes. Farm animals suit any baby, and a room built on cream, sage and wood rather than pink or blue grows easily into a toddler room. The quiet pasture, neutral minimal and barnyard friends ideas are the most neutral.
Which farm animals work best in a nursery?
Any animal you love works. Lambs, calves and piglets are the easiest to build a calm room around, because their soft colors are simple to repeat in bedding and paint. Tractors and roosters bring more color and energy.
How many farm prints should go on a nursery wall?
One large print or a set of two or three works for most nursery walls. A matching set of three in a row over a crib or dresser fills the wall without looking busy.
How high should you hang farm prints in a nursery?
Hang art with its center about 57 inches from the floor and 6 to 8 inches above furniture (Architectural Digest). Keep the crib empty except for a fitted sheet (NIH Safe to Sleep), and hang any art near the crib securely and out of reach.
How do I keep a farm nursery from looking like a petting zoo?
Choose one background color for every print, keep the animals to three or fewer per wall, and let the furniture and fabric stay plain. A farm room looks designed when the animals feel like a set rather than a collection.
