Kids Room Decor: How to Choose the Art

Kids room wall art has one tricky job: it has to suit the child you have now and the one who moves in about two years later with opinions. Three questions narrow it down fast: how old they are, what they love right now, and which room it's going in.

By age

How high to hang it: hang the center of the piece about 48 inches from the floor. That's lower than the usual eye-level rule, which suits a room where most of the audience is under four feet tall.

Over furniture: leave 6 to 8 inches between the top of the bed or dresser and the bottom of the frame, and aim for art about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it.

On a gallery wall: keep 2 to 3 inches between frames.

What size wall art is best for a kids' room?

For most walls in a kids' room, 16x24 or 18x24 is the easiest size: big enough to anchor a dresser or toddler bed, small enough not to crowd it. Go 20x28 or larger over a twin bed or on a feature wall, and 8x10 or 8x12 for shelves and reading nooks.

Is framed art safe in a kid's room?

Our frames come with a kid-safe plexi front as an option, at the same price as real glass. For a kids' room we'd choose plexi, especially over a bed or in a playroom. Float framed canvas has no front panel at all. Whatever you choose, hang it securely and out of reach of climbers.

How high should you hang art in a child's room?
