Nursery Decor: Choosing a Look

Nursery decor gets looked at a lot, mostly at 3 a.m. from a glider. Choose something calm enough to live with at that hour and specific enough that it still feels like your baby's room when they're four.

Neutral, boy or girl

Neutral nursery wall art keeps to sand, cream, sage and soft clay, so it works whatever the bedding and whoever moves in next. For a more classic direction, boy nursery wall art often leans into dusty blues, little vehicles and sleepy bears, and girl nursery wall art into blush, lilac, ballerinas and fairies. Mix the two if you like. It's your nursery.

By theme

A theme makes a nursery easy to finish, because every later decision has an answer. Woodland nursery wall art brings foxes, bunnies and deer in soft greens. Safari is lions, giraffes and elephants in warm sand tones. Celestial is moons and stars, good for a room built around sleep: see moon and stars nursery decor. Botanical is quiet florals and leaves, and fairy wall art is soft and storybook-like.

Match the art to the room

Pull one color from something you already own, like the rug, the crib sheets or the paint chip still taped to the wall, and look for art that repeats it. One shared color is enough to make baby room wall art and the rest of your nursery wall decor look planned. If the walls are a strong color, a piece with a lighter background keeps the wall from swallowing the art.

Nursery Safety Comes First

Baby nursery wall art should be the easy part of the room. A few habits keep it that way.

  • Over the crib: skipping this spot altogether is a fine choice. If you do hang art there, choose a light piece, hang it high enough that a baby standing in the crib can't reach it, and secure the frame to the wall rather than resting it on a single nail.
  • Over the changing table: same idea. Keep the frame above arm's reach, since little hands reach up during every change.
  • Plexi instead of glass: our frames come with a kid-safe plexi front as an option, at the same price as real glass. In a nursery, we'd choose plexi every time.
  • Hardware and cords: keep hooks, wire and any picture cords out of reach and out of sight. Check every piece is still level and firm whenever you move the crib.

What Size Art for a Nursery?

Our pieces come in two tall shapes, each with a wide version, and every product page lists the sizes for that piece. Here's where each size tends to fit in a nursery.

SpotSizes to look at
Over the cribOne 16x24 or 18x24, or a set of 2 or 3 at 12x16 or 12x18 each
Over a dresser or changing table12x16 to 18x24, or a wide piece up to 24x18
Beside the glider8x10, 8x12 or 12x16, at seated eye level
Nursery gallery wallA set of 4 or 6 at 8x12 or 12x18 each
Feature wall20x28 to 24x36, or wide sizes up to 36x24

How high to hang it: on an open wall, hang the center about 48 inches from the floor. That's where your eyes land from the glider, and it still works when your baby starts walking. Over furniture, leave 6 to 8 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame, and aim for art about two-thirds the width of the piece below it.

Nursery Prints, Framed or Canvas?

Unframed nursery prints, from $42. Our nursery art prints come ready to frame. Choose these if you already have frames, or want to match frames across the room.

Framed nursery wall art, from $99. Arrives ready to hang with hardware included, in natural oak, walnut, white or black. Pick kid-safe plexi or real glass for the front, same price.

Float framed canvas, from $119. Arrives ready to hang in a natural wood, walnut or black float frame, with nothing in front of the art. The softest look of the three.

Starting prices are for the smallest size of a single piece. Larger sizes and sets cost more, and each product page shows the exact price.

Nursery Gallery Wall

A nursery gallery wall looks like a lot of decisions. With a set, it's one. Our gallery wall sets come in sets of 2, 3, 4 and 6, every piece the same size and palette, so the whole wall goes together before it leaves the box.

  • Set of 2 or 3: one row over the crib or dresser, 2 to 3 inches between frames.
  • Set of 4: two rows of two, a tidy square beside the glider.
  • Set of 6: two rows of three for a full wall.

Some of our nursery designs let you choose your own set: pick which designs and how many, from 1 up to 6.

Nursery Wall Art FAQ

Is it safe to hang art above a crib?

It can be, with care, and leaving that wall bare is also a fine choice. If you do hang art above a crib, pick a light piece with a kid-safe plexi front, secure it to the wall, and hang it high enough that a standing baby can't reach it. Keep cords and hardware out of reach, and check it whenever you move the crib.

What size art goes above a crib?

A single 16x24 or 18x24 piece fits most crib walls, or a set of 2 or 3 at 12x16 or 12x18 each in one row. Aim for art about two-thirds the width of the crib, and keep it high enough that a baby standing in the crib can't reach it.

How high should nursery art be hung?

On an open wall, hang the center of nursery art about 48 inches from the floor, which is roughly where your eyes land from the glider. Over a dresser or changing table, leave 6 to 8 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame. Over the crib, go higher, out of a standing baby's reach.

Glass or plexi for a nursery frame?

Plexi. Our frames come with a kid-safe plexi front or real glass at the same price, and in a nursery we'd choose plexi every time. If you'd rather skip a front panel altogether, float framed canvas has nothing in front of the art.

How much does nursery wall art cost?

Our nursery wall art starts at $42 for an unframed print, $99 framed and $119 for float framed canvas. Those prices are for the smallest size of a single piece; larger sizes and sets cost more, and each product page shows the exact price. U.S. orders over $100 ship free, and under $100 shipping is a flat $6.95.

Can I change the colors to match the nursery?

Yes. Send us the piece and a paint color, swatch or photo of the room, and we'll adjust the colors at no extra charge. We can also swap characters, change the size or combine two designs. You'll get a free proof to approve before anything is printed. Custom pieces may take an extra day or two for the proof step.

How long does shipping take?

Every piece is made to order. Production usually takes 2 to 7 business days, and standard U.S. delivery usually takes another 2 to 4 business days after it ships. These are estimates, not guarantees, so order a little early if you have a due date in mind. If you're in a hurry, contact us and we'll do our best.

Can I return nursery wall art?

Yes. Every order comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, counted from the day it arrives, including custom and personalized pieces. Email support@teepeejoy.com with your order number. Return shipping is on us if we made a mistake; otherwise it's yours. If anything arrives damaged, we send a replacement at no cost.
